Another weapon used was poison gas. Chlorine gas was first used by the Germans at the Second Battle of Ypres in April 1915. It was used to kill hundreds of French troops. The British also used chlorine gas. Later in the war there were developments and more deadly types were used. Mustard gas would blind and burn whatever it came in contact with. Poison gas killed an estimated one million people on all sides throughout the war.…

The quarters still weren’t ready when we arrived so we spent a week in the American Arms Hotel. We had two rooms, and there were plenty of stores and restaurants in the area. And the Army was paying for most of the meals, so the transition was tolerable. The kids liked it, but it was small, and I was grateful it was only a week. We received the call our quarters were available for inspection. We were lucky to receive a four bedroom apartment on the first floor. There was a basement for storage and laundry, so even the first floor was close to being equivalent to the second floor. I was a senior Major, so I was eligible to get on the waiting list for a duplex. They were lovely houses, and we hoped we would get one. We got our DoD driver’s licenses, arranged for quartermaster furniture and standard utilities including a phone. It was terribly expensive to use the phone; even local calls cost significant money, and overseas calls were about $6 a minute, which is the equivalent of over $17 in 2015 dollars. That limited our calls to the parents severely, but, fortunately, both Mom and Blanche visited. The apartments had balconies, and ours was nicely…

The bored-cafe will be a stress-free zone and a smooth into to a new school year. Also, the admission is one item for the food bank. Since Thanksgiving is coming up on October, 9th, instead of asking for money, it would be beneficial to collect food for the food bank, since many people can’t afford a Thanksgiving dinner. We would use the cafeteria because it's something most students are familiar with and it has tables and chairs already set up. We would need representatives from students council to help with food and drinks, (Set up, Serving and take down.) we would also like help with the setup and takedown of the decorations and board games. And we would have background music, for this, we would use speakers plugged into either a laptop or phone. So we would need access to the speakers and any cords associated with them. Because it is after school we would need teacher volunteers to ensure nothing goes wrong, and to handle the situation if something does go wrong. The stakeholders of the event would be student's council and staff…

The stiff black apron hung awkwardly on my hips as I casually tried to tie the strings around my waist. I had been at Gino’s Restaurant for only ten minutes when Maurizio, the manager, grabbed my arm abruptly and said, “Follow me to the dungeon.” Unsure of whether or not he was joking, I smiled eagerly at him, but his glare confirmed his intent. I wiped the smirk off my face and followed him through the kitchen, which was louder than Madison Square Garden during a Knicks/Pacers game. A tall woman with a thick Italian accent pushed me while barking, “Move it, kid, you’re blocking traffic.” I later learned she was a waitress, and waitresses did not associate with the low-level busboys. Maurizio brought me to a dangerously steep staircase that…

Our Hall Council hosted the Super Smash Bros tournament on November 3. I realized there was a resident that I’ve never seen before so I took the initiative to get to know him and learn more about him. We ended up talking for an hour about his major, his job, and I informed him about future programs. I also mentioned that the lobby was a great place to interact with residents. He seemed really interested about coming to the programs and I learned a lot about him. He even started to come downstairs a bit more after our first interaction. A week later, I saw him at Wal-Mart and invited him to eat brownies with RA Jordan, OA Edwin, and myself. Additionally, this was a great way to check up on him as well as introducing RA Jordan to him since this…

For my service learning, I volunteered at the MDC Kendall Campus Single Stop Office. Under the supervision of Monica Darden, I completed certain tasks in order to help students stay in college and graduate. I passed out flyers to inform the community all the benefits the program offers. I assisted students in applying for various benefits if they were eligible. I made phone calls to get them to make an appointment for financial counseling or tax preparation. I helped the students to make those processes smoother, easier, and shorter.…
