Personal Narrative: New Technology High School
The prompt states that some students have a background that is so integral in their person it would be heinous to leave it completely out of the application. For me, this part of my identity is my schooling. Years ago, as a small 8th Grader, I was given a big choice, one that would shape my future from then on. I was given the option of leaving traditional schooling to instead join a school with a completely different culture. This school was New Technology High School. Obviously I decided to go, otherwise I wouldn’t be writing this essay, and it was honestly a life changing decision. New Tech was different, and it was a perfect fit for me. I have grown so much over the past four years, and the skills and applications I have acquired will be

The reason my academics aren’t going well as you or I would like is because of the several family issues I’ve had to face during my high school career. It began my Sophomore year, I found out my mom needed surgery in her arm so the chances of her cancer spreading would be reduced. I was under a great deal of stress worrying about my mother, taking care of my four siblings making sure they knew everything was going to be okay, even though I wasn’t sure myself. It was all up to me; while my other brother worked to help with bills, my mom being in the hospital, and my dad working. Taking care of my siblings consisted of cooking, homework, cleaning, nightly routine, and putting them to bed. When the work was done it would be around 10 o'clock. It was already tough to buckle down and focus on homework without all the stress. With all this my first semester grade was less than great.…

For school, the thing that has changed was my grades have improved so that I was able to get principal's list. My life has changed because I have found out about my true friends and my “fake” friends. The ones that I know more outside of school are my true friends but the ones that I don’t talk to at all is different. This helped me change the way I look at people and kinda prejudge. But hopefully this habit will just go away with time.…

If I were given the opportunity to change something, I would definitely choose to go back and do over the years I was in high school. During my time there, it was more important for me to do things that were more fun than sitting in class and learning. I thought that being in school was only useful for socializing and passing time. I only went because my parents forced me and so I never put any real effort into it, my adult life suffered very much because of it. Not having a high school education set me back in a lot of ways, and it closed many potentially successful job opportunities. After finally realizing what I lost, I decided to come back to school. I finally see doors opening for me now, that could have been open for me since the beginning…

I’ve been using technology ever since I was in elementary. And as I grew older it became a bigger and bigger part of my life. It was my first day of practice for high school swimming. There I was- a scrawny freshman, idolizing these upperclassmen who towered above me. Being the only freshman in my class, my coach had me train alongside these giants. I remember the countless morning practices, which always involved grueling endurance sets, where my teammates lapped me constantly while I struggled to make the intervals; feeling disappointed in myself, but determined to continue working hard in order to catch up to my teammates. However, even those grueling workouts could not compare to Christmas break that year. A whole week of practices that were near impossible for my teammates, and absolute torture for me. I will never forget one set from that week. It was a set of 32x150s with a descending interval every four. By the last eight, I was no longer making the interval and struggling to keep up with my teammates, who ended up lapping me, as usual. But I still put every ounce of effort I had into that set, and swam every lap long after everyone else had finished. I challenged myself with a fierce determination to…

Looking back to middle school I remember the fear I had for someday having to go to high school. My teachers always told me how different and harder it would be when I went. My older sister was in 9th grade at the time and I wanted ti be with her when I went. But the high school she was at was different from the one all my friends were going. I always had a hard time making decisions and now I had to choose between going to a school with my friends or going to a school that would help me prepare for the future. So I decided I would just apply to my sisters school to see if I got accepted, going into the interview I wasn't really scared because it didn't matter to me, I just thought whatever happens, happens. Surprisingly I got accepted and…

My high school graduating class consisted of 66 students, so obviously everyone knew everyone and unfortunately everyone’s business. When I was a junior, a well-known and liked senior boy had a very public breakup with his girlfriend of 3 years. They had met as freshmen and were expected to marry after finishing school. The next day he drove his car at what police estimated in excess of 100 miles per hour into a concrete railroad bridge that crossed the main road out of town. After that, the bridge became known as Burkett’s bridge and I was never able to drive through it without getting a chill and goosebumps on my arms. It’s been over 40 years since high school, and it is amazing how often I still think of Bobby and his…

Lunch was over and students were filing into the classroom. As soon as we got inside the atmosphere felt really uncomfortable. Throughout my entire life, I have been a part of a Hawaiian language immersion program in public school. This experience not only allowed me to become fluent in the language of my culture, but also allowed me to perpetuate the traditions of my ancestors. During my granparentsʻ and even my parentsʻ generation, speaking Hawaiian and being Hawaiian was looked down upon. Not many other young native Hawaiians are able to speak our language today because these prejudices persist throughout society, which is why I am grateful that I am able to. To me, this part of my life is an important detail to include in my application because it is an essential part of my identity.…

Growing up I spent most of my childhood in Vietnam living an ordinary life. My parents were not risk-takers until they decided to quit their career as educators and move to the United States. The last time I remember something as huge as starting in high school was having to move to Oregon from Alaska, but for better or for worse, here I am, attempting to make my mark on this big blue Earth. However, Highschool was never always just peaches, cream, rainbows and unicorns. If I’m to be one hundred percent honest here, I was legitimately terrified of it, whether it be the totally reasonable fear of being stuffed into a locker by a bully or getting lost in a labyrinth of corridors and passages of infinite classes and broom closets. But those fears never truly emerged up until the final days of freedom that remained from my graduation of 8th grade. As the days drew nearer, so did my fear reaching the brim of a breakdown. I was scared,…

Today I taught my second lesson at Frontenac High School. I don’t feel that this lesson went as well as the first. I started class by going over the take-home assignment from Tuesday. The students were more talkative today and didn’t seem to want to pay attention. I think this was because they didn’t have school the next day. I would stop and wait for them to focus back on me.…

I’ve always been the dorky, creative type. At age seven, I taught myself how to use Adobe Photoshop Elements so I could recreate the layouts from my favorite horse books and draw in my own imagery. At age 10, I was creating custom clothing and 3D meshes for the Sims 2. I didn’t know it yet, but I was discovering a passion would change my dorky life forever.…
