Personal Narrative: Organizing My Blood Drive
My first step for organizing my blood drive was contacting Shannon Metcalf, who is a Red Cross representative to establish a date, help determine how many donors to expect, and give tips for advertising. Once the date was cleared by my principle, we met. Shannon gave me the materials needed like posters, wristbands, parental signing forms, and information to set up my own online blood drive coordinator account, where all scheduled appointments must put in by me. Once the materials were received, posters were put up, announcements and social media advertisements were created. and then emails were sent out to the faculty members to inform them about the upcoming event. Everyday for month, my study hall was spent going classroom to classroom asking …show more content…
Every Wednesday, there was an FFA meeting hosted by me to inform members about the blood drive and if they wanted to volunteer throughout the day to help. There was a list created and sent to the office and faculty to inform them who would be out of class and where they would be. Two days before the blood drive, wristbands with the time and date were delivered by me not only as a reminder for students, but also as a pass to the faculty to get them out of class for their donation. Faculty was also emailed a list of all donors and times. The day of my blood drive, tables and chairs needed to be set up in the gym. By arriving at the school at 7:30 am, the gym was ready to rock and roll for the American Red Cross staff who arrived at 8 am. We helped unload their equipment. A list was printed out and posted in the gym for all students who needed another reminder of when they are donating and also for the students who were volunteering throughout the day. Once the drive started at 9am, donors needed to be checked in, told where to sit, and then once the drawing of the blood started, we need to talk to the donors and check in on them to make sure they are doing

Under the presidency of S.A.D.D (Students Against Destructive Decisions) in my high school, I've conducted and lead many projects to help many organizations and even planned and coordinated many community service projects. But, out of the many project that the club and I have planned and created, I would have to state that I've projected my leadership role the most while our club and I went to Feeding South Florida for a field trip that I've planned. The reason why I state this is because, Feeding South Florida was a common place that many people knew, especially our members, and so before we got to the warehouse, I've explained the purpose Feeding South Florida stands for and the job that we would have to do there. When we got to the warehouse and began working, I would help the members and other volunteers carry boxes that were a bit heavy for them to carry and to help them understand how to sort the items that were donated to the warehouse into categorized boxes that they had provided to us. The purpose on why I led this project is because of the purpose behind Feeding South Florida, which is to collect, pack and send foods to the many shelters and food kitchens that they have provided in South Florida and working on this project created a positive effect on my life. The reason why I state this is because, while volunteering, it made me feel as if I was privileged.…

What if your mother suddenly has a terrible heart attack and now needs open heart surgery. Picture your son or daughter getting into car wreck and needs an emergency blood transfusion. Imagine a sibling having leukemia, and needs regular blood transfusions to survive. Not exactly what you want to think about on a Sunday afternoon, but these are the harsh realities of the world we live in. Many of you may have experience with these tragedies, and lost. If your thinking “I wish I knew of a way to help” well there is a way. With the simple donation of blood, platelets or plasma, you could save the life of a loved one or a complete stranger.…

Sunday is the main events so the runners for the half and full marathon came in to retrieve their information packets, and shirts which they will wear during each run. Before I was assigned to work with a few other ladies behind the Shirt Distribution stand, the staff explained to all the volunteers about the water pouches that will be available to use during the events, and briefly demonstrated how the new water pouches worked, and how we should hold the water for the runners as the passed by. At the Shirt Distribution stand, we handed out long sleep shirts for each race, and collected the Shirt tabs which were located on each runner’s bibs. Once we collected the tabs, we each placed them in a clear plastic tub, which the head of staff would use to count if they needed to know how many shirts were distributed. We each took on equal responsibilities for the shirt distribution tasks, and when we were not busy; we conversed and got to know one another a little better. Pizza and burgers were provided for lunch, along with some water or soda to drink. Starbucks was available for everyone to drink freely, and cupcakes were being donated for two dollars towards charity. One of the supporters was a ballet company touring for the holidays, so they chose to put on a free short performance for the visitors at the Freedom Marathon Exposition, while giving the children a free lesson on how to properly stretch the muscles in their body. I thought it was great way to market the business and to get local patrons interested and eager to see more. I found it interesting to see that all ages were running or walking the marathons and it open my eyes up to how many people are actively involved in the community. Everyone was really humble and patient while waiting to receive their shirts which allowed the…

I am interested in running for the position of Secretary of the National Honor Society so that I can assist the President and Vice President in making our school a better place. We, as members of this prestigious group, have the duty to involve Saucon Valley as a whole in order to do community service for the benefit of all. As Secretary, I plan to amp up the school spirit here at Saucon so that every individual student feels included and motivated to better our school and our community. For example, the blood drive that NHS hosts every year can become a schoolwide effort with a little more enthusiasm. In previous years, many underclassmen ignore the blood drive completely because of their age and thus, their inability to donate blood. But if we were to make the event more “fun” as a whole, we could encourage students to get the word out to their parents, neighbors, or friends to get involved and donate their blood to those who need it. And by “fun”, I imply decorations throughout the school, exaggerated morning announcements, offers of food, anything that will get the student body excited to share their blood!…

Three years ago my friend Amy and I were looking for a way to bring customers into Behm’s Sawdust City while helping the community. After about a month of throwing ideas around Amy came across an advertisement for Toys for Tots, and we decided that this would be a great way to bring people in and help the community. Little did we know that it would be a huge success! Every year we have had to become more organized. The first time we get together we decide on what band we are going to try and book and where we are going to ask for donations. Next we split up and go to different businesses and individuals that have donated in the past or may want to donate this year. Finally we advertise for the dance and start looking for volunteers to help.…

To accomplish my goal I did some refreshment my nursing skill and producers before clinical. I am interested in pursing the major I chose above because I have developed a passion for medicine through my own health obstacles. I suffer from Chronic Migraines, which has caused me to spend a great deal of my life in doctor's offices. Positive experiences with my doctors lead to me idolizing them as a young child; so much so that I memorized the every bone in the body at the age of five. This passion stayed alive and well as I grew older, however my admiration began to transition from the doctors themselves to the subject. This all stemmed from my own health; I wanted to know exactly what was happening with my body and why. Now, I want to dedicate my life to the subject and possibly be the doctor that inspires someone to discover their…

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

Drive is something that tons of people have not yet to grasp. The word drive itself is just as powerful as its definition. Having a drive for something means there’s passion in what you’re doing. My drive is to get out of bed every day and be productive. It’s my drive that pushes me to get to work and push myself forward. Having that drive for something isn’t something I would want to let go of either. The problem today is that it’s that it’s hard to have a drive for something since it may take a while to achieve that goal. Sometimes I want to give up just thinking it’s not worth it in the long run, but an underlying drive kicks in that keeps me going.…

Every fall since my freshman year, a group of students, including myself, rake leaves from people's yards in Three Forks; usually these are for the ones who can't do it themselves and is a greatly appreciated by our entire community. I've also volunteer to give blood every fall and spring since last year. I've been turned away once because I have very small veins, which makes it difficult for them to poke. The times I've been able to give, finding a vein is usually a step that entails a few tries and the process normally takes an hour or so for me. Although giving can be difficult at times for me, I love knowing that somewhere I'm saving a life. This spring, I plan on helping a man who recently had a brain tumor removed. He had a rough surgery along with a difficult recovery, and it is unsure when he will be able to go back to work. I will help him by going grocery shopping for him, cleaning his house, taking him to any appointments he has scheduled during my visit, and simply just by keeping him company. This man is close to my heart, so I believe helping him will have an immense impact on me as to who I can help and what I can do for people, whether it be big or…

In order to raise awareness to other students, a message in the morning notices told the students who wished to participate what the 40 Hour Famine was about and where and how they could sign up or donate to the cause. Then 20 posters such as Appendix 3 were hung up around the school for those who did not hear the notice and to prompt students further to join. When students did approach me or other event co-ordinators an account on the official 40 Hour Famine website (http://www.40hourfamine.com.au/ ) for sponsors to donate to. Overall there were 6 students who joined the event. There were not as many participants as predicted and, as was mentioned in the survey, the reason was most likely due to lack of motivation for students to participate. For my participation in the social action I gave up verbal communication for 40 hours, as did most people due to it being more convenient than not eating, no furniture etc. Overall I raised $17.30 due to there only being a short amount of time to collect donations from sponsors. I received an official certificate for participating in the event (Appendix 4). In the future there could have been more preparation before the event in order to advertise the event and allow other students to sign up. There also could have been a presentation informing students about Global Hunger which might have motivated students more by seeing the effects of…

So far for my Graduation Project I have worked quite a bit communicating between people and trying to get events arranged. My graduation project is going to be on Geriatric Nursing and my product will be in two parts. First I will host a Blood Drive at Southwood Nursing Center on April 11th which I have already arranged with Southwood and the hospital in Clinton. Secondly I will gather items from church, family and friends to take to Southwood and be distributed among the residents. I became a certified CNA last semester and while doing my clinical I grew a deep bond between the residents there. Most have been placed there because families are unable to take care of their constant needs and many become neglected by family over time. I noticed while there that only a few of the residents received regular visits from family or friends. Our healthcare system simply cannot afford the necessities that people need at times and many times there is a under stock of items like soap and deodorants. The second part of my product will include taking up these types of items and distributing them. Items will include toiletries such as soaps, deodorants, toothpaste and toothbrushes, razors and brushes as well as items that help keep them occupied such as books and puzzles. And of course blankets are included because the anatomy of a geriatric patient keeps them cold constantly. I believe that this project will not only be beneficial to me and my grade but will also be beneficial to the residents who are deeply in need. My mentor is a RN in the community and someone who has been in the field for over 25 years. She is extremely knowledgeable on the topic and even worked in a long term facility for years. The staff at Southwood are friends of mine and are very supportive of my project and have even agreed for the living room of the facility to be the venue of the blood drive. Although abuse in these types of facilities is common I have found that the staff at Southwood are very…

According to Ferrell, Fraedrich, & Ferrell, “a firm should develop and disseminate a code of conduct that communicates required standards and identifies key risk areas for the organization” (Ferrell, Fraedrich, & Ferrell, 2015 p. 114). In addition, “high-ranking personnel in the organization who are known to abide by the legal and ethical standards of the industry must have oversight over the program” (Ferrell, Fraedrich, & Ferrell, 2015 p. 114). Currently, the American Red Cross (ARC) has sighted major issues with the APC practices of collecting blood donations (Strom, 2008). Furthermore, Eric Blumberg, the FDA’s deputy general counsel, stated “if fear is a motivator, we’re happy to help out in that way”- when he attend a closed Red Cross…
