Thesis: By including “Donnell Furlow” in her collection, the editor intended to explore the different effects that growing up surrounded by drugs and violence has on people. “Donnell Furlow” appeals to readers’ emotions by demonstrating how Donnell’s heart-wrenching situation led to his moral ambiguity and blurs the line between good and evil. Donnell grows up in the Rockwell Garden project, a low-income housing community rife with gangs and the problems they provoke, such as violence and drug use. Donnell’s two older brothers were both involved with this lifestyle, and dragged Donnell in at a tragically early age. As he recounts, “by the time I was in grammar school, I was learning how to clean guns, how to shoot a gun, how to hide a gun, how to bag up cocaine and how to shake dope……

However, behind the bar she espied multiple passports of women from Eastern Europe, along with numerous US dollars. Growing curious, she then continued to creep onto the second floor unaware of what lied ahead, there she found seven women trapped inside, with used condoms all over two mattresses on the floor terrified as if they'd been gang-raped.This shows how Kathyrn is self- sacrificing because she took a risk and put herself in danger with no experience. (Kathryn Bolkovac - Moral Heroes ) Another way she is self-sacrificing is when she discovered some of her co-workers took part in the complication and decided to take charge, putting her career in danger; even stating “At the moment I sent the email, I had already been experiencing serious retaliation against my work and reporting. Of course I never thought that my international law enforcement career would be destroyed for telling the truth and seeking justice, which is of course what the role of a law enforcement officer is supposed to be.” (Maiello, Lia Petridis n.d). As a result, she lost her credentials and labeled as a “Whistleblower”. This shows that she sacrificed her well being and even her career for what she believed…

I walked on a thin layer of ice in high school; every time someone judged me, I could hear the ice slowly cracking under my feet. My life was in a fragile and brittle state during my junior year. I didn’t have the support of my parents, nor of my closest friends at this stage of my life. My own parents, teachers, and classmates had lost faith in me; to them it seemed as if I had ruined my life and that I would no longer succeed. On the contrary, I was determined to be successful because now I had someone special looking up at me as their role model.…

The social-emotional domain is most of interest to me. As Humans we interact pretty much throughout our lives, our emotions often play a large role on how we develop socially and how that ties to our emotions. From birth we gradually start to develop these relationships with the people around us. Over time this process of learning to communicate, share, and interact with others takes many years to develops. We continue to develop these skills into our teenage years, and even as young adults. So with that I do believe that the development in this domain is mostly a continuous one.…

Leaving, Mr. Holderman’s office, Jerry stopped at the bail bondsman’s office before going to the station. After standing in line to register to see Marlene. Jerry waited until they directed him to a small area enclosed with glass windows a single stool along with a phone on each side. After waiting several minutes, Marlene entered the small room wearing a baggy, orange, jumpsuit. She didn’t look like the woman he loved. With her hair combed, but not styled, as was her custom, with no make-up or jewelry. A look of terror filled her once sparkling eyes, the sight of her, broke his heart.…

All I could think about was the discussion she was having. Instantaneously, I realized she was organizing something. Her brother had been drafted the same day as Ike, and ever since then she had been up to something. I scurried closer to her and tried hard to listen in on her conversation. I leaned closer and closer, but I could hear nothing. I tried coming closer once more. Thump! I feel down next to the girl. “Don’t be such a spaz!” She blurted while lending a hand. I grasped it tightly and stood up.…

I walked a long corridor between offices filled with paperwork unfinished in stacks. I wondered how things had happened here, if the officers put up a fight, or if they gave up their weapons to the men who seemed to know what was going on. One office had a desk riddled with bullets that seemed to partially answer my question.…

What do you think of when you hear the words One Direction? Most people probably think of a cheesy boy band and their screaming tween fans, and a few of people may not even know who they are at all. Well I’ve never been one to judge or rule out a band based on the perspective of their haters. To get to the point, yes, I am an eighteen year old college freshman who is also an enormous fan of the British/Irish boy band One Direction. As a small town resident from Hebron, KY, there’s not much to do in the area for fun. So when my favorite band goes on tour, I have to be prepared to go the distance, literally. Last year’s concert took place in Louisville,…

They say that I am just a kid. That I can't change anything. They say the world is a cruel and heartless place, and it is. In today's world people are more concerned with their text messages than their neighbors. People are more worried about Jersey Shore than the bullying at local schools. But the real problem is not their ignorance, it is their indifference. They play the "life is unfair card," and move on. But not me. To change the world, it starts with a single person.…

Back in my early twenties, you would find me going out to bars or night clubs either with friends or by myself. I found this enjoyable since I was bale to meet a lot of different people. A few of my best friends would ask me, what club are you going to?. Maybe we will join you!. Low and behold no one would ever join me as they always said, you can’t meet anyone at those places, those places are nothing more than meat markets!. I would explain to them that, you need to go to this club at the casino at least once and that this club is the best club I have ever been too. The music is great, the people are friendly, the atmosphere is awesome, and this place is like no other. No one would ever join me or believe until one day…

I am a firm believer that one person can make a whole difference. All actions have a beginning and an end. The beginning starts with an idea followed by an action which gathers momentum to form a movement. Martin Luther King had a dream and started with actions to realize his dream and people followed him to make the dream come true.…
