When people ask what I do for my job, I try to think of a word that fully explains it. I consider myself a handyman; this is because I do all kinds of different jobs. One day, I might be changing the light bulbs, and the next I could be hauling concrete in ninety degree weather. Even though my job is difficult, it teaches me to work hard and how it feels to earn money. Every cent I earn, was fought for. I was battling with myself to keep going.
I started working for Mr. Blomquist about a year and a couple months ago. He primarily makes Santa Claus’ and duck decoys out of wood. However, that product is only what the buyer sees. I walked into the small white workshop uncertain of what the day would bring. I was nervous for my first day of work. The man inside shook my hand; his callused fingers gripped my palm. He introduced himself as Mr. Blomquist.
“I remember my first day on the job,” Evan, one of the guys I work with, explained to me as we drove the worn looking pickup. “We cleaned out the sewer, and I hoped things would get better from there.”
I was truly frightened of what the first day might bring because of Evan’s story about when he started. To my surprise, I started my day off by walking their golden retriever, Chester. It seemed like it would be alright until I heard that we were headed into the woods. By the look on Evan’s face, I could tell the woods were not going to enjoyable. When we arrived, I saw a fallen down tree lying adjacent to the dirt path. The three of us got out of the pickup truck and walked over to the wood splitter. For the next couple hours, we cut, sledge hammered, and stacked a few truck loads of wood. Then after that we headed back to the workshop, and I used a blow torch to clean all of the drill bits used for carving. I had never worked so hard before that day. This day made me understand how much determination it takes to keep going even as sweat dripped into my eyes and not a single part of my body was
