Personal Narrative Life is a journey, filled with twists and turns, that leads a person to develop into a unique individual. My journey has been filled with twists and turns, ups and downs, that have shaped me into who I am today. Within the past five years, the meaning of my life has evolved greatly; more so than it did in the other 21 years of my life. The events that led to this evolution are filled with many moments of ups and downs, revelations, looking for myself, and a little heartbreak. When I look to different theories that might explain my changes, I look to motivational theories. Religion, culture, race, family, and gender have all played a significant role in my personality development. Many people look back at their life and …show more content…
Life if a journey, and through that journey, I have become who I am. Within the past five years, the meaning of my life has evolved and developed.
After I had turned 21 years old, I started working in local casinos as a janitor. I didn’t have a high school diploma, so finding work was difficult. I bounced from job to job, making minimum wage. I had to live with my parents, because I couldn’t afford to live on my own. After a year of doing this, I was out of work for over a year, before I was hired at another casino. I wasn’t there very long, and I was let go once again. My parents were irritated because I was now 23 years old, still living with them, and unemployed. To further my stress, my relationship with my long-term boyfriend was becoming unstable. Eventually we did break up, and it made me realize that I needed to change, or I would end up being on the streets. I had to become more stable, more mature,

I look to Self-Determined (Deci & Ryan, 1980, 1985, 1991; Ryan, 1991, 1995) and Intrinsic (Deci, 1975; Lepper & Greene, 1978) theories. When I look at what began my changes, I see intrinsic motivation; where I am motivated by external sources. My boyfriend breaking up with me, my family being irritated, being unable to find work, and other external reasons lead me to realize that I needed change in my life. After I had gone through my schooling at Job Corps, and developed more of my personality, I became more self-determined; where I don’t rely on external sources to motivate me. I started college for myself; to better myself as an adult and also for the experience. In conclusion, motivation in both ways, internal and external, has been key to my own personal

My mother, “Regina Hopkins,” has been a positive influence in my life. She has raised 6 kids all by herself as well as earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a City College in Gainesville, Florida. My mother has been through pretty much everything a person can go through outside of war and was still able to be there and provide for all 6 of her kids. In high school, my mother wanted to play football and couldn't because she was a girl and back-in-the-day women were not allowed to play football with the guys. However, she remained strong by raising 6 kids and independently took care of all of us on her own. My mother has several qualities that I would love to develop. The first quality she has is balance; she certainly knows how to make…

Back in June, I was kicked out of my apartment that I had been living at for almost 3 years because my dog was over the designated weight limit. I received a note on my door stating that I had to either get rid of my dog, or vacate the property. I begged for just 1 more month so I could find another place to live, but they refused. I honestly didn’t know where I was going to live and for 24 hours, thought that my dog and I would have to live out of my car. I had no money saved up for emergencies and was already working 45 hours a week at my job. Thankfully, I have an amazing mom who put in many extra hours at her 2 jobs to help me financially. For the next several months, my expenses were far more than my income. I was in the negative in my bank account every week and I couldn’t get caught up on bill. I’ve ruined my relatively good credit score for 23 year old, which I’ll be paying for years to come. I was in a bad mood every day and all I could think about was how I could put even more hours in at work. I remember sitting outside at work crying on the phone to my mom and telling her how sorry I was that I got myself into all this. I don’t really see any other way that I could have dealt with the amount of stress I was under at the time. I never did anything drastic. I vented a lot of that stress into my work and isolated myself from others by working in the back stock room most of the time. I kept my journal and on my days off, cleaned my apartment from top to bottom. Fortunately, I’m out of that situation and doing much better…

In sixth grade, I stood before a podium that stared back at my English class. This was not how I envisioned sharing my love for reading and writing; however, it was required. My palms felt sticky, and I just knew that the entire class could see my heart as it was about to hop from the walls that kept it safe. I prayed that I would not forget the lines as I recited The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. In sixth grade, reading, writing, and I started a relationship. Today, we have yet to break up.…

Yet another Thanksgiving, and I was stuck in my uncle’s basement watching the Redskins face off the Dallas Cowboys. Michael Jordan, Serena Williams, and various other famous athletes all grinned at me from their respective Wheaties boxes, seemingly mocking my pain. My uncle collected them and, for some reason, had decided the bright orange boxes would be a great decorative addition to the basement wall behind the television. I remember once, when I was younger, I was searching for a movie to watch and I accidentally brushed against a limited edition Michael Jordan box. The box began to teeter, and I immediately knew that I was doomed. All the boxes began to fall like dominos to the floor. My uncle, needless to say, was furious. Thus, it was seemingly fitting that the offended boxes, now realigned on the wall, would have the privilege to witness my torture by football.…

Starting from a place I remembered as a teen, moving from a place that was warm to a place that had all four seasons; such as winter, spring, summer and fall. The First place that I grew up was surrounded by mountains. During the winter it was full of white snow, something that I was never used to seeing coming from California where all one would see was sandy beaches and the waves clasping one another. As I remember being so new to Park City, UT all I could see was the wonderful views of trees, mountains and people skiing or snowboarding. I have to say this was a fond memory because for the firs time I was actually able to experience the feeling of what winter was…
