Personal Narrative: Story Formed Life
I have been raised in the Church all through my life. Both my Mother and Father worked at Crossroads Church for several years. Plus, I have gone to CHCA for all of my life and taken a Christian Studies class every year. Therefore, I have a lot of experience with the Bible and have basically read all of the bible but not in the correct order. Originally, I would only do hermeneutics of the Bible and not until 8th grade did I start to do historical exegesis. In church when I was a child, I was force fed verses and meanings of the bible that impact personally. This may cause me to put some ideas and thoughts into that bible that aren’t there. As I matured, I began to study the bible with my family and friends. We would take verses and would midrash …show more content…
Still all of my studying was hermeneutical studying. In school I did learn a little about literal exegesis, especially about genres of the bible. In the 8th grade we started talking about what historical exegesis was. I learned to ask questions about what was happening around the time of the author and the original meanings of books. I also learned how to discern different genres of the bible and how to go about them. I have learned a lot in your class over these few days and have shaped my view of the bible. Now when I look at the bible I first do exegesis and find out what kind of genre a book or story is and then try and find out about the historical context of the book. I never had a very good exegetical base and have always done solely hermeneutics and will most likely have very wrong interpretations of the bible. I have also realized how to choose a translation and what different kinds of translations there are. In the past, I have always used the NIV translation for school and for church. They thought that it was the easiest to understand while still being accurate. I t still is a good

I’m happy with who I am today, just as everyone should be. But if I could change anything about myself, I’d want to have more motivation to do things. In the mornings before school I can barely get out of bed because I’m so tired and don’t want to go to school. I’m exceedingly intelligent but I don’t have any drive. I procrastinate on most of my work, and sometimes I just don’t want to do the work. Right now I’m rank 14 in my class but I could’ve been higher if I had any drive my freshman year. I don’t think about how my decisions now will impact me later and when I do, I don’t really care. I also don’t have much motivation to do things in sports activities. Last year I played volleyball and I never had that much playing time. Never being able…

In the book "Journey into God's Word: Your Guide to Understanding and Applying the Bible (pp. 100-102), Duvall and Hays teach the four steps of the Interpretative Journey for the New Testament letters. These steps, when utilized properly, helps us grasp the meaning in the scriptures Galatians 5:16-18, but also gives us an understanding of how we interpret things in the modern world as opposed to those in the biblical world.…

My whole life since the age of 3 revolved around sports. I excelled in soccer and continued to play at the collegiate level. During my high school years I wanted to be the best player I could so I started reading fitness magazine and as much about nutrition as I could. At 16 years old, I started to lift weights before school started and immediately fell in love with the combination of weight training and…

My mother, “Regina Hopkins,” has been a positive influence in my life. She has raised 6 kids all by herself as well as earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a City College in Gainesville, Florida. My mother has been through pretty much everything a person can go through outside of war and was still able to be there and provide for all 6 of her kids. In high school, my mother wanted to play football and couldn't because she was a girl and back-in-the-day women were not allowed to play football with the guys. However, she remained strong by raising 6 kids and independently took care of all of us on her own. My mother has several qualities that I would love to develop. The first quality she has is balance; she certainly knows how to make…

Imagine looking down at your phone and seeing an incredibly long text message from your best friend. This is inscrutable coming from her, so you start to panic. As you open the message, your heart drops as she reveals that her grandmother, the person she is closest to in the world, has just passed away. This happened to me late my junior year of high school, and my heart broke for her. Concerned, I immediately ordered a large cheese pizza and peach iced tea, her favorite comfort foods, and rushed to her house.…

One topic I found interesting from this chapter was the artist Durer. I liked his pieces The Four Horsemen of Apocalypse and Knight, Death, and the Devil. These paintings do indeed show his love of what the Bible teaches. These woodcuts and engravings make you want to look deeply at the paintings to discover the message they hold. Knight, Death, and the Devil gives a lesson that is hard to stay true to for every Christian whether they realize they need it or not. Wordly views and ideals surround a person every minute of everyday of his or her life, which can seem overwhelming and very difficult to fight against. Yet Durer is so true to his beliefs and love for the Scripture that he creates an image to show how important it is to not let the world dictate how you think and act.…

Ever since I was born, I was a military brat. Not knowing where to call home, or if any place could be home, I moved. I moved six times, four of those places were towns that nobody could think about. Germany, North Carolina, Alaska, North Carolina, Germany, and Alaska, yet no place to call home. May 22, 1999, my first day on this world; Kronach hospital had its first American baby in their hands, yet they acted like I was a different species. The only event I remember was when I was about one. While I was one, I grabbed everything in my reach, even a grill handle. As a baby, I did not know that the handle was moving, the grill top had smashed my thumb. Ever since that event, I now have a starfish mark on the side of my right thumb from where the stiches were.…

Before looking at the pro and contra of historical-critical exegesis it is necessary to define this method. One of the many textbooks teaching the historical-critical method "Methodenlehre zum Neuen Testament" by Wilhelm Egger method gives us this definition, "Diese Methoden lesen den Text vor allem unter diachronem Aspekt, also unter dem Aspekt der Entstehung des Textes, und sehen vor allem in der Rekonstruktion der Entstehungsgeschichte einen Weg zum Sinn des Textes."# The finding of meaning in Scripture is the goal of any interpreter and henceforth of any method of exegesis. This is very closely related to the understanding of how revelation works. Scripture revealed to the world could mean two things. On the one hand one could interpret the revelatory act as being a revelation of the letters and words of the text, on the other hand a revelation of concepts and events which were then put into texts through human authors. The text itself therefore would be completely human, and open to criticism. However the meaning of Scripture would then be unchangeable even if the meaning of the words used to express this change. If the text itself is revelation, then there is no scope for criticism, however the meaning of the text would change, because the meanings of the words change with time. Believing that God through Scripture revealed truth to us, and further accepting Aristotelian logical axioms, particularly the axiom that something cannot be and not be at the same time, one has to accept that the meaning of the text does not change. If that is the case the text has to be open to criticism as explained above, and in my opinion the historical-critical approach with its five-step system of textual criticism, philological…

There are many reasons to why we often misinterpret the Bible. Most common thing that Christians do is taking the words out of context and use it the way they want to. Taking sentence or phrase out of context and leads to a different meaning of the original message. When we pulled individual verses out of the text, we ignored the surrounding paragraph which causes us to misunderstanding the real definition of that story. Schultz talks about the four types of Biblical context which could be distinguished when discussing the Bible; Literary context, Historical-Cultural Context, Salvations-Historical context, and theological-thematic context. Literary context is the text surrounding an individual verse or passage. By examining the literary context, it could prevent…

Throughout my life I have encountered many circumstances that have shaped me into the person I am today. I was born in Moroleon, Guanajuato, Mexico. I attended school in Mexico all the way to second grade. In the summer of 2006 I moved to Cumming, Georgia. It was the hardest thing to do because I left everything that I care the most about. We lived in a trailer which was not the nicest place and in the middle of the forest. I started school at the beginning of August. I had always loved school so I was so excited for the first day. I knew it was going to be hard because I would have to conquer so many obstacles on the way. At this time the only English I knew was probably counting from one to ten and some of the colors. My Father knew some…

The first 39 books of the larger work called the Bible, is called the Old Testament. The Bible itself is arguably the best selling and most read book of all time, yet it’s well known to be quite challenging to read through and understand. The Old Testament portion of the Bible, notably the most difficult portion of the Bible for most to study and follow, yields 39 books from multiple authors, and spans over 4000 years of crucial world and church history. If that were not enough to take on, the Old Testament comes our way through multiple styles of authorship and formats, including but not limited to, books of history, law, proverbs, ethics, philosophy, treatises, dramas, songs, epics, biographies, and letters. There have been many books written and published to survey, explain, and/or bring to light the Old Testament, but none more helpful to me than the review subject of this paper, the work of Dr. Elmer L. Towns, entitled “A Journey Through the Old Testament”.…

When reading the Bible and carefully reading the surrounding context of a passage, but ignoring it’s literary genre will often lead to misinterpretation, misguided, and normally missed messages. The words in the Bible are intended to help, inspire, guide, and teach us about the goodness of God. We must be able to connect with the author to gain the full benefits of his message. As Duvall and Hayes (2008) states, “To disregard literary genre in the Bible is to violate our covenant with the biblical author and with the Holy Spirit who inspired his message.” (p. 65) To do otherwise would be just reading words on the paper.…
