Personal Narrative: Team Based Jeopardy
Every team needs a coach they can count on. I joined my school’s Academic Challenge team, a program similar to a team-based Jeopardy! game, in middle school. Each week, we counted on our coach coming and running practices every Thursday. Eventually, the tables would turn and I would be the one the students were depending on.
We stopped the middle school team after my freshmen year due to time constraints with our coach becoming a full-time teacher. It wasn't until the end of my junior year that I realized how small the team had gotten. It was less than half of its original size. As a result, my coach considered stopping the program after I graduated. When the one you’ve always counted on loses hope, it’s hard to be hopeful yourself. Academic

Miriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines ‘coach’ as “one who instructs players in the fundamentals of a competitive sport and directs team strategy” (218). Many people depict coaches as grouchy, intense people who only care about whether their team wins. A coach, to me, is more than that. A coach is a person who teaches valuable lessons, whether it be on or off the court, field, or stage. They…

Many coaches go through difficult times, from losing a match or a game, not having it go the way you wanted it to entirely, but one thing everyone knows is that all coaches put in 100% effort on trying to improve their team and strive them to do better every single day. Weather it's working one on one with a team mate, or working with the whole team, coaches put in the time in their day to help enhance others.…

I played basketball for all four years of my high school. I was on the freshman team my freshman year, Junior Varsity team my sophomore year, and played Varsity my junior and senior year. My freshman year I was voted team captain and that helped me gain leadership skills and communication skills. I earned the award of honorable mentioned in basketball. In Basketball I practiced a lot, because I knew I could get better. Throughout basketball we had several coaching changes. We had Mr. Smith then Mr. Parker and now Mrs. Smith as coaches. Having a different coach every year I feel like it was making it more difficult for the players to grow as a team and ourselves. Each coach had very different ways of teaching the game. Even though it was hard to have coaches leave we also gained different amounts of knowledge from each one, which I thought was a great privilege to get to…

When the season began, we did not have a coach to lead us, so we practiced apace with the Varsity squad. A few weeks into the season, the Varsity coach found us a mentor that would lead us. As a few more weeks went by, our coach started picking up on more activities, which was too much for her to handle so she left, and we were once again without a coach. The team began to fall apart and it became very stressful for all of us. After the first three months of cheering, we had lost 8 girls on the team. Throughout those three months, my…

Recently I was voted MIA ambassador of Peabody Veterans Memorial High School along with Ben Manoogian. We went for an interview at PAT and got interviewed the superintendent. We spoke about the new turf field, how to be a good effective leader, and about our soccer seasons thus far. After the interview Mr. Buckley drove us back to the school, and he was speaking to us about the great opportunities we have at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School. Although I hear those words often I never really listen. Mr. Buckely said, “Ben and Katrina you guys are great leaders and great soccer players, but remember you will not always be playing soccer. After college soccer will probably end for you. So take advantage of your education. You are a student before you are an athlete.” He went on to tell us his experiences, and how him dedicating himself to his schoolwork put him in the successful position he is in today.…

As we entered the last week of practice, I wanted relish what I thought would be the last few moments of the season. The varsity head coach was present at the last day of practice, and I was surprised when he pulled me aside during a drill. He told me that he had noticed my success during the season, and he wanted me to join the varsity team; for the varsity team still had two weeks of practice left before the state tournament. I held in my excitement and accepted his offer.…

As a coach I want to be the leader of a successful program who helps student athletes excel on and off of the field. I will do this by first hiring good assistant coaches around me who can help me bring my vision to reality. It will require dedication from the student athletes in the classroom and in practice and games to be the absolute best they can be in any situation. It will be up to me to instill in my athletes hard work and dedication in everything they do. So I will first need them to respect and maybe even fear me a little bit, but I still need to maintain a close enough relationship with them to where they can consider me a friend and be able to turn to me in any time of need. I will first stress the importance of hard work through drills and conditioning, but at the same time not make it feel like work for them; make them understand there is a reason for all of the things that we do on a daily basis. Once the team understands what it takes to play for me; maybe even some quit because they think it will be too hard, that's what I want; I don't want the weak ones who will give up on themselves and their teammates, only the strong will survive. Then you can evaluate each individual in every facade of the game and start to teach them in the areas that they are weak and strengthen their strengths. I want my team to be able to runs themselves without one coach needed at a practice or a game. Of course coaches will be there but by halfway through a season I want my team to run like a well-oiled machine not needing any coaches to tell them to do any specific thing. I will instill in my team self confidence that they can do anything, beat anyone, and achieve any goal that they set their minds on on any given day. I will teach about winning and losing, how to win and stay humble and how to lose and not have your confidence shaken to the point to where you struggle to perform. I will teach…

As a freshman, with previous experience playing volleyball in middle school and at the beach, this essence of competition was very attractive to me and so I tried out and made the junior varsity team. Last year, during my club season, after sitting on the bench for the first part of the year, my coach recognized my improvement and hard work and gave me the starting role for the second half of the season. The little voice in my head telling me "you'll never make it!" or "you're not good enough!" inspired (and continues to inspire) me to persistently improve every aspect of my playing during practice and such an attention to detail, combined with my inner motivation to improve, lead to my…

High school arrived faster than I thought was ever possible. It brought new faces, teachers, feelings, friends, etc. Those new feelings brought on something that adults told me never to do as I was growing up. The renowned phrase, “don’t ever give up on your dreams,” rung through my ears as I made the realization that soccer was no longer something I was passionate about. It felt as though I failed my parents and my peers, but I knew this was the most rational decision I could make for myself to ensure my…

Ever since I could walk, basketball was my life. I played it all year round and enjoyed every second. I played on an elite, national AAU basketball team and received a couple collegiate offers. So finally when it came time for varsity basketball, I was ready to play at that next level. When tryouts rolled around, it was all I could think of. Basketball consumed my thoughts. On the last day of tryouts, when I got called into a little white room for a one-on-one talk with my new head coach, all I could think about is what position I will be playing throughout the season. But when my basketball coach said, “You didn’t make this year’s girls basketball team,” I was in disbelief. He later stung me with the statement, “I thought you would be crying more,” which is when my emotions and thoughts changed. At first, my friends and family supported me as I faced a setback in my life. But then, as time went on, society went back to their daily routine, unaware of the thoughts going through my head. This experience changed me and how I look at every situation. It inspired me to think differently when adversity hits. Eventually, I tried new things like indoor lacrosse, skiing, became an officer in DECA, and continued to play AAU and intramural basketball. I trusted my Christian faith and realized He does have a plan and purpose for every individual. From November 19, 2012, I had two choices: to move on or dwell on the situation. I choose to change my thoughts and my perspective and plan for the future.…

My freshmen year was the only season where the football team was actually really good as a team. The other years we have been ok, but nothing amazing. So as the best player on the team with a goal of playing college football, sometimes I was forced to just play for myself. This wasn’t how I wanted it to be, but I didn’t have a choice because a lot of my teammates didn’t put forth the effort required to be a successful…
