Personal Narrative: The Art Of Quitting
Four a.m. Eyes are hazy. My cap and goggles hang loosely in my hands. Walking up to the board, my thoughts lingered, “Why?” Summer had just begun and what better way to celebrate the break than morning practice. The thought of quitting came as quickly as it went away, because I knew it was going to be worth it in the end.

Although swim season was four months away, as Captain, I felt obligated to lead by example, even when nobody is watching. To give my teammates my all would not have been enough without changing my mindset–to continue to push when the going gets tough. My mother, “Regina Hopkins,” has been a positive influence in my life. She has raised 6 kids all by herself as well as earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a City College in Gainesville, Florida. My mother has been through pretty much everything a person can go through outside of war and was still able to be there and provide for all 6 of her kids. In high school, my mother wanted to play football and couldn't because she was a girl and back-in-the-day women were not allowed to play football with the guys. However, she remained strong by raising 6 kids and independently took care of all of us on her own. My mother has several qualities that I would love to develop. The first quality she has is balance; she certainly knows how to make…

Time is winding down and the past thirty nine weeks has been nothing short but amazing. It has been full of different emotions and feelings. From the stretching of the skin to the sudden movement I have never felt before. It was all a new experience, but the feeling was indescribable. After a restless night, the sunrise appeared before I knew it. The pain was unbearable, but after several hours and a couple of good pushes you were here. I was extremely exhausted, but the relief was absolutely amazing. At first sight I fell in love with you. Not for how you look, just for who you are. I never thought I could feel affection like this. What is this? Is this how it's assume to feel or even resemble? It's kind of insane how you, only one individual,…

“We all stray from time to time….and when you do, OWN IT! If you deny it….you are giving up control again.” This can teach a lesson to people struggling with drugs and alcohol. If you deny that you have a problem, you will continue to let these things control your life, but if you own up to it, you can help yourself or get help from others. The quote, from the “I don’t know the Bible…” paragraph, “‘Well done, my good and faithful servant,”’ reflects what I believe in and what I have learned. Growing up I heard many people tell me, “God first, others second, and yourself last.” First of all, these two quotes are telling me to live a faithful life by putting God first. Also, to put others before me and serve them just like Jesus did.…

In sixth grade, I stood before a podium that stared back at my English class. This was not how I envisioned sharing my love for reading and writing; however, it was required. My palms felt sticky, and I just knew that the entire class could see my heart as it was about to hop from the walls that kept it safe. I prayed that I would not forget the lines as I recited The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. In sixth grade, reading, writing, and I started a relationship. Today, we have yet to break up.…

I moved six times, four of those places were towns that nobody could think about. Germany, North Carolina, Alaska, North Carolina, Germany, and Alaska, yet no place to call home. May 22, 1999, my first day on this world; Kronach hospital had its first American baby in their hands, yet they acted like I was a different species. As a baby, I did not know that the handle was moving, the grill top had smashed my thumb. Ever since that event, I now have a starfish mark on the side of my right thumb from where the stiches were.…

I don’t let on a whole lot about some of the things that happen in my home life because it never seemed appropriate or necessary in anyway, I never even really told my friends about it. If I could have one 'do-over' in life, my do over would be High School. It would be High School, because knowing what I know now, I would've been a lot more involved in school. I would have joined more clubs and organizations. I would have cared more about my activities. Now, applying for college and scholarships, I have nothing to show for it. I only really did one organization in high school. If I could have a do over, I would redo my high school career and hopefully have a more impressive resume. Middle school does not prepare you enough for high school. Teachers say, do work, you won’t get easy passes like you do now. It’s going to be harder. When really, we need to know more than that. We need to be told to get involved, to be diverse.…
