Personal Narrative: The Disney Dreamers Academy
The world is filled with new, exciting experiences and adventures that change a person’s outlook on life. A person is said to leave an experience much different than when he or she entered it. I had one of those life changing experiences in high school. In August of 2016, I decided to apply for the Disney Dreamers Academy presented by Steve Harvey and Essence Magazine. The Disney Dreamers Academy is a four day weekend in Walt Disney World where 100 selected high school students around the nation participate in various workshops and sessions hosted by a variety of celebrities and Disney employees. During the program, I was able to attend a workshop in Walt Disney Imagineering/ Engineering. During the workshop, nine people were grouped together to create and present a new attraction to a variety of Disney engineers. We were given the opportunity present our attraction at the “Open Mouse”, giving us the ability to network with top executives in the company and a variety of celebrities. The program also gave me the opportunity to listen to various celebrities such as Steve Harvey, Cam Newton, and T.J. Holmes. Teaching us to keep following our dreams no matter the obstacles that stand in our path. The ability to speak directly with many Walt Disney Company executives has allowed myself to expand my outlook. I was given the guidance and determination to keep following a path in my life. Before the Disney Dreamers Academy, I was not a confident person. Attending this program has allowed me to be more confident in my decisions. Teaching aspects of myself that I did not know existed. Learning that my fears will allow myself to fail. I was able to conquer my shyness and reach out to many Disney employees, during the program, for career input. The program taught me that leadership is not a title but a responsibility. I have grown to be a smarter and more responsible leader. These new lessons about myself opened me up to an array of
