Personal Narrative: The Evanston Vineyard Church
Mothers are someone who God chooses for us and not who we choose for ourselves.
Some of us receive a different gift in our lives, the presence and role of a motherly figure, while some of us the physical embrace of our biological mothers. In 2014, when I lost my mother, my home church in the U.S.,The First United Methodist Church, Evanston and my Field Site, the Evanston Vineyard Church mothered me in ways that I will never forget !
Today, on this Mother's Day, I would like to say a very special THANK YOU to my Field Site, The Evanston Vineyard Church for being the gentle mother that embraced, welcomed, appreciated, forgave, encouraged and, walked a journey with me in my time of pain, grief and loss. I am very humbled by the motherly and pastoral

Driving down Highway one on a weekend vacation, my wife and I arrive at a little town by the name of Carmel. We decide to stop and drive around this beautiful town. We stop at the beach for a while and enjoy the beautiful day. After enjoying the day we leave the beach and drive a different way than when we came in to the town earlier that day; we get lost. As we are trying to get back to Highway one we turn on Rio Road and come onto one of the most beautiful buildings we have ever seen. We decided to get off and look inside; since we saw a parking lot and a couple of cars parked in the parking lot. When we went inside we found out that the beautiful place we were…

A mother can impact lives greatly. Could you imagine growing up without a mother? You can either be very lucky with a mother that cares for you or be deprived of that sense of love from a mother figure. It is inhumane to destroy any kind of maternal bond because mothers are not people to depend on, but are people to make depending not required.…

The greatest asset to my life growing up besides my family were the churches that my family attended. Although we have moved several times due to my father being stationed in various locations with the military, the Baptist churches we have been a part of have been a stable place for me. Currently, I have the privilege of calling South Knollwood Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas my home church. South Knollwood is under the leadership of Pastor Jeremiah Metsinger, a third generation preacher.…

I have lived in Sweet Water for sixteen years. It is not the biggest town, but it is great just the way it is. Sweet Water is small, and you see people you know all the time. People in my town are very nice and also caring. You always see someone giving another person encouragement, or making sure that they have all of the love they need. This is a small town, so of course people gossip, and it gets around quick. Overall, Sweet Water is a great town, and I am going to enjoy my last couple of months here.…

This morning I attended a weekday mass at All Saints Catholic Church. The church itself is relatively large from what I saw. The exterior had many well-tended trees and bushes, with a sign pointing to the office, and a cross about six feet tall out front by a cement walkway which led to the entrance. The building itself was a taupe color with dark brown roofing and glass doors leading at the entrance. As I walked through the glass doors I was not greeted by anyone, so I followed what everyone else was doing. I noticed a holy water font in front of the doors leading directly to the room of worship. I watched as the casually-dressed Parishioners, all aged at least sixty-five years, and mostly white, middle-class women dipped their fingers into the font and then made the sign of the cross, before entering the worship area.…

From kindergarten to the 6th grade I went to a private Catholic School in Rancho Cucamonga called Sacred Heart Parish School. The school was complete hell, the teachers were unreasonable and a unrealistic expectation for children at that age. The school was very small and consisted of only 300 students for grades K through 12 making the group of students very close knit. There were some hinders to this, but I created life long relationships and an array of beautiful memories. While that was a pleasing part to the school, it was not enough to keep me there.…

I never thought how interesting it would be to visit a different place of worship besides Christianity. Since the day I was born I’ve been a Christian and whatever anyone else believes in is wrong and that they are going to hell if they don’t believe in Christianity. About 3 years ago I visited the International Buddhist Progress Society a Buddhist temple in Naperville. Buddhism from what I learned looks more like a way of life or guidelines to it rather than a religion. Buddhism tells you how you could live life better but doesn’t scare you with the prospect of hell instead you live with ignorance. My own history with Christianity still made me doubt or fear the conquences of going to this temple. Part of me believed that I be punished by…

This past summer I volunteered to go on a mission trip to a small town on the west side of Tennessee, called Somerville. Although it isn’t traditionally a “deep south” state, this city more than fit the culture. Everyone we met had a heavy accent, drank sweet tea, ate biscuits, and went to church multiple times a week. When my group first arrived at our “resident’s” house, I wasn’t exactly pleasantly surprised. I was surprised not by the fact that she lived in a trailer home or that there was mold growing down her bathroom wall, but by how she greeted us. She was less than friendly. It could be she was embarrassed that she needed help or that she just didn’t want strangers in her house but I felt a little hurt. Every day we invited her to have lunch with us but she never accepted. I am so used to people being overly friendly because I come from a tight-knit community. When she did come out of her room and we had a chance to talk with her, she was cold and hard to relate to. Overall, I was disappointed with the experience.…

While the real experiences I have had at home and abroad have been spectacular, I have learned to truly value them by watching my mother. She has nurtured my life with her passion for learning, and changed it with her devotion to humanity. IN her endless love of everything and everyone who is touched by her, I have seen a hope and life that is truly exceptional. Next year, I will find a new home miles away. However, my mother will always be by my…

The word mother is a simple word but has many more different definitions. This could be the legal, social or traditional way of looking at a mother. A legal definition of a mother is such that as the legal dictionary 2012 states ‘a woman who has born a child is deemed a mother’. However this cannot always be the case for some women. As some women cannot bear children so one of the alternative solutions for them is to go down the route of adoption, other stages also such as fostering or even surrogacy. The social way of looking at a mother was mainly confined to mother and child and that the mother…

When I was first asked to give a talk on mothers, since it would be mother’s day. I started wondering how Mother’s Day came to be. I was surprised to discover that Mother’s Day has a history longer than Christianity! Ancients celebrated Isis (Mother of the Pharaohs), Rhea (Greek Mother of the Gods), and Cybele (The Great Mother). The worship of these ancient goddesses is similar to the reverence we show to Mary, Jesus’ mother as these Mother Goddesses are often depicted with a baby in arms.…
