Finally, one of the paramedics said, “We need to talk about your mother’s health so I can finish my report.”
“Mom broke her hip about ten weeks ago and had been doing okay,” he said. “In fact, my little nephew, Billy spent the day with her yesterday.”
“How old is Billy? Does he live here?” The paramedic asked.
“He’s seven years old and has lived with my family since my sister and her husband divorced about five years ago. He loves doing things with Grandma.”
“What medication did she take?”
“I’m not sure about everything, but I know she took fast acting morphine for pain. She always
kept her medicine in her bathroom.”
“Do you know her doctor’s name and number? When was the last time she saw him?”
“Her doctor is John Miller. I can get his number. She saw him yesterday. I talked to her last night and she seemed tired but fine.”
“All right,” said the paramedic. “We called the coroner. They are on their way; the officers will stay with you until they arrive,”
“What do you think happened? She was fine yesterday afternoon,” Joshua said.
“I’m sorry, I have no idea, but it happens,” the paramedic answered.
