Personal Narrative: Unilateral Choanal Atresia

I was born with Unilateral Choanal Atresia. This is a condition where one or both sides of your nose have flesh and bone blocking it from getting air. This is a condition you are born with, and the scientists say it isn’t genetic, it is a One in Thirty-thousand chance, but one of my other brothers had it so I question if it is genetic or not.
I was 21 months old when I had my surgery; nevertheless this was unquestionably young for surgery. At first my mother and father didn’t have the slightest clue as to my issue, but, as being a twin when I had strands of snot, and mucus being pulled out of my nose, a clear sign of Choanal Atresia, and my twin didn’t they knew something wasn’t quite right. After many ENT appointments, phone calls, headaches, and unanswered questions later they finally discovered the issue, Unilateral Choanal Atresia. My mother replied to the ENT specialist with “He has what?!?” Followed by a look to the ENT from my father, they both had never heard of it.

They said blood had fallen on my vocal cords causing muscle spasms in my throat, making it impossible to breathe virtually closing my throat. After the follow up surgery the doctors brought me to the recovery room and came out to inform my anxious mother and father they could see me now the follow up was a success. My mother heard my shrieks from the end of the hall since the anesthesia had worn off, she now smelled blood and vomit all over me.
