Personal Narrative: Upward Bound
During my time in Elementary and Jr. High I never really took school seriously. I would go to class, but I’d never really make it a priority until I got into a program called Upward Bound that changed the way I’d look at school forever. I was sitting in class around the middle of September when I was called down to the counseling office. I had no idea why I was called down, but I didn’t really care much. When I arrived to the office there waiting for me was a big fat Mexican (as he likes to describe himself as) smiling at me ready to talk to me. I had no idea why this man was smiling at as if he knew me. He then told me that his name was Dave and that he was from Upward bound and that’s when I realized who this man was. Dave was the director …show more content…
I walked in and was really nervous from all of the new faces that I had never seen before. I’m usually really good at making friends fast, but it was really hard to approach anyone because of how everyone knew each other and had their little group of friends around them. After a couple of weeks of getting into the rhythm of waking up every Saturday at 8:00 I started to enjoy it and made a bunch of new friends. Everything was good they’d take us to Jazz games, festival of trees, museums and community service projects. Even though we would go on crazy fun adventures it wasn’t always a fun time. Since I wasn’t too serious about grades they were. I’d get talked to constantly about my poor grades. I hated getting talks about my grades even though they were really motivating it just made me feel like I wasn’t good at anything when it came to my grades, but eventually I coped with it and took advantage of the opportunities that were given to me by the program. They had a computer lab that we could go up to and use. Every Saturday there would be tutors ready to help me if I needed it. This was all provided so wouldn’t have an excuse for my bad grades. They were there for me so I could graduate high school and succeed in

I’ve lived in the same neighborhood for as long as I can remember. I’ve gone to school with the same peers. I’ve been blessed enough to not have dealt with much turmoil in my life. I live with my supporting mother who has always been around to drop everything she’s doing to come to my aid. With all this in mind, you could come to the conclusion that I have not had to deal with a lot of change in my life nor have I ever welcomed it. So in my sophomore year when I was invited to participate in a summer program which entailed me leaving home for six weeks, me nor my mother were excited about the opportunity. I did not know that the program, called the Emory Pipeline Collaborative Program, would completely change my outlook on life and my identity…

The Shared Vision I am currently in the process of crafting includes working for an organization that will challenge me to grow both in knowledge and as a person. Peace Corp is one organization that can give me what I want out of my company and organization and how I am going to get that out of my new organization. At this time I am trying to link my personal vision to the organization’s potential in order to help myself align the organization’s purpose with my own purpose (vision): and to prepare the individual groundwork for creating a shared vision. I am at a crossroads on my career path, where I can either I can decide on my personal vision and try and line up my career with that vision or I can let someone else determine what type of work…

Growing up, I was unalike from other kids, I was "imaginative". During class, I would always by myself, writing bizarre stories with preposterous characters and with an unpredictable plot, while the other kids were playing with their friends. Many of my classmates would be entertained by loony stories, while other kids thought that I was just some lonely nitwit writing absurd stories to make up for not having any friends. In that year I was relocated to a different school, which I didn't want to go because I didn't have any friends at the school, I was currently attending and it would be much more difficult to make new friends. In the following year, I was still that shy girl in the back of the classroom not interacting with anybody, but it…

Traveling into the Indian Territory, we were being angrily chased down by three Indians furiously shouting at us. Dashing through the thick forest, the savage Indians were throwing spears and shooting arrows that narrowly missed us. Although neither Gideon nor I was mortally injured, I did suffer from a nick from an arrow piercing near my ear. Thankfully, a group of burly fur traders approached from the side, which frightened the Indians to run away. Acknowledging that Gideon and I were inexperienced travelers in the west, they offered us protection in exchange for some valuable possessions. As a consequence, knowing that they were our best alternative for survival, we gave them our antique gold pocket watches and assumed the identities of novice fur traders. From that point on, we followed them through the west and adopted their skills for efficiently hunting animals and keeping warm in the harsh, cold weather. During one of our rest points, we approached a large Cherokee settlement located in Park Hill in which our group leader was friends with the Cherokee leader John Ross.…

Football has always been a big part of my life. As a young boy I would day dream of making insane touchdowns, making tackles that would leave man stuck in the ground, and even winning the heisman trophy. In 7th grade I had begged my mother endlessly to sign me up for pee wee football because she would always worry about the risks of football. After finally getting her to sign me up, we went straight into the season. I chose to play running back because as a 12-year-old I was remarkably fast having timed 5.3 in the 40 yard-dash. After a few weeks in the season we approached the playoffs and found out our opponent for the first round of the playoffs were the jaguars who were undefeated. Our team didn’t have the best chemistry on…

When Thursday, June 16th 2005 came I went up to the school I once attended looking forward to seeing all of my friends again. I walked into the lobby greeted by an oh so familiar voice and face. "Oh look who it is, Ms. Miller, I assume you are here for the graduation ceromony take a booklet and find a seat." My wonderful vice principal, Mr. Trokon. I resented his mocking statement and reasured myself that leaving that hell hole was the right thing to do. As I entered the auditorum I was overwhelmed with an unfamilar and unexpected feeling, shame. I noticed how each teacher saw me and looked almost disappointed. I tried to shake it off when I went into the dressing room to see my friends. I was approached by eight or nine giddy girls all talking at once. "I'm so nervous...Oh my god what if i trip...Did you see all the people out there... I can't wait until…
