Personal Narrative: When Calls The Heart
Because I am a devoted fan of the shows and films that appear on the Hallmark network (and I adore the mystery franchise, especially), I remember seeing a young man step into the role of Logan, the son of Jennifer (Lori Loughlin) and Jason (Steve Bacic), and I couldn't place why he looked so familiar. My Hearties friends quickly filled me in when they mentioned he had been on season one of When Calls the Heart. Of course! I was elated to get the opportunity recently to ask this talented but busy guy some questions about his work on Garage Sale Mystery as well as his overall experiences within this business. img_1581.jpg RH: What inspired you to become an actor? What kind of training have you received?

CH: I was always the kid who loved to dress up. I loved to wear my Spider-Man costume all the time and pretend I was him. My parents always said I had a very vivid imagination, and I kept them entertained. When I was in kindergarten, my mom was babysitting a girl from my class who had an agent and was going to auditions. She told me about how she got to play with toys at the auditions, and if you book the job, you get to be on TV and sometimes keep the toys. I asked my mom if I could do that too, so eventually she found me an agent, and I started auditioning. So I guess it was my friend and my desire to be on TV that inspired me.

I was the only kid on set, and I loved to hang out with the crew between scenes. One of the crew taught me to do a trick with a coin, and after that I was hooked. I started visiting the magic store in the children's market on Granville Island in Vancouver, and the staff there got to know me really well and would show me how to do tricks. It all started with the coin trick, and now I've learned a lot of other ones including some amazing card tricks that I love to entertain people

When you think about what you want for your future is there someone you look up to for inspiration? For me this person is Lin Manuel Miranda. Lin is a triple threat; playwright, singer, and actor which are all things I aspire to be. He proved that no matter where you’re from, if you work your hardest you can achieve great things. From a young age Lin’s parents encouraged him to start piano and theatre, which eventually lead to his starts on Broadway and Disney.…

My greatest artistic experience is playing the role of Sweeney Todd. It was the hardest role I’ve ever played. I got to play Sweeney Todd at fifteen years old. I was about to finish my freshman year of high school. I don’t believe many other actors get the opportunity to play a role as diverse as Sweeney Todd. The background research I did on the character was incredible. To become a murderer and live what Sweeney went through was extremely difficult. One reason was because I’d never loved someone in that way before. In order for me to gain that emotional experience, I had to put my own mother in the scenario. I also never felt revenge or rage in that kind of way before. My director was able to get that out of me over the month of character…

As I was beginning a small career in the entertainment business, my mother was my source of encouragement. She inspired me to continue in the entertainment business because she knew that this was an opportunity of a life time. By the time I was eleven, I began using my voice in Spanish-language version of American films. Acting was becoming clear to me that it was my new calling and I cherished it more than singing and dancing. Then I received my first Broadway role at age thirteen where I was passing eleven and looking as if I was nine. I always looked young for my age. The Broadway drama I stared in was called Skydrift. Shortly after my appearance in the Broadway show, I was contacted by Hollywood talent scouts. The scout informed me that when the time was right he would notify me.…

When I was younger, cameras and computers surround me. I always was filming myself doing practically anything. I want to become a director, because I am very passionate about the art form that is film. Whether it is a drama, comedy, and action, it always amazes me how all of the actors are able to become a new characters on camera and create an amazing piece. It is often overlooked however that there is more happening behind the camera. Directors are what make a movie the…

Throughout my school life I have taken part in many different performances that were put on show to the public. I acted in numerous short films with the A level film study classes and studied drama at and A level. One of my earliest works was acting in my primary school productions of Wizard of Oz and Cinderella; and in secondary I was in the school production of Charlie and the chocolate factory. As I got older I discovered acting in films as opposed to stage productions. I thoroughly enjoy both sides of acting; stage and films. During my time at Chestnut Grove 6th form I was asked to act in numerous short films created by the A level film studies class as my talent had been widely recognised throughout the 6th form. A short film I was acting in called ‘Double Crossed’ as a gang leader; was then used for two students A level course work in film studies. Whilst making this film I felt alive, the constant re taking of shots may annoy some people but I take it as…

Every human struggles everyone has hardship. When I was young I began to notice that maybe it is hard to understand what other people struggle with. The start of a mundane life began as usual a bus ride to school, but today something else happened a flash of yellow a soundless luxury sports car zoomed bass by a Lamborghini. As the car passed by everyone looked at it with amazement as the never seen a car pass from this part of the street. I began to wonder when will I get one with imaginary job I will live the high life. The bus hits a bump on the road I am begging to rationalize who much work will it take to achieve greatness to struggle to overcome adversity.…

From singing Phantom of the Opera in the shower to pretending to be Mimi Marquez swinging from the wooden bars and ladder of my bunk bed belting melodies from my favorite show, Rent. My mother implanted theatre into my heart since the beginning. But I was always missing just one aspect of the magic I knew, performing. I yearned to hear the patter of my feet on the stage, for my voice to echo throughout a theater during a rehearsal, to transform into a different person and tell their story. But when I was younger I guess it just wasn't my time yet. My family didn’t really have the money to enroll me in any sort of performing arts program and our town lacked a theatre program in schools until high school. Performing in the comforts of my own bedroom would have to do until I got to high school. Once I got to high school I eagerly auditioned for the 2 shows they produced a year, desperate to finally be on a stage. Yet, there was something missing from the experience, I wasn’t aware of it at the time and it wasn’t until my friend Kevin pulled me aside during one of our rehearsals and informed me about the pre professional theatre company he was apart of. Soon enough I convinced my mother to sign me up for theatre camp at Gaslamp Academy of Performing Arts. Essentially it’s where I found myself as a performer and as a person. Before the program I hadn’t ever taken risks or made choices on stage as a character and as myself in life. If I was ever in a place with the opportunity to meet new people I wouldn’t take advantage of it, usually I’d wait until people came up to talk to me because I just couldn’t bring myself to talk to people. My confidence was at an all time low before Gaslamp, I didn't believe that I could accomplish anything. However, spending 8 hours a day for a month with a group of accepting, loving, intellectual, inspiring people changed me and I learned so much about myself that I…

Finally, when I moved to New Orleans I started volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital and helped with pop up clinics for the Latino community twice. Overall I found that helping others shouldn't be something seen as duty or mandatory, it should be spontaneous. Through others experiences and hardships we learn and grow as human beings, not only did I enjoy helping others but I felt that it helped me with my problems. Having moved around so much and meet so many people and living by myself so many years I came to truly be thankful for my blessings and specially for my hardships. Hermann Hesse once said, "I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value." Helping others made me realize that we all need help and that my way to help others would be through their health. It also taught me not to judge anybody, especially if you don't know what they have been through. I am hard believer that everything happens for a reason, and all the weekends I spend watching my parents help others helping others myself made me the determined person that I am today. Finally, the most important lesson I learned was to never give up, no matter how hard the task is or how bad the problem is there will always be someone willing to help and you can always be both sides to that, the helper or the one who needs…

I've always known how utterly scared I am of preforming in any fashion. And so when I got the opportunity in my sophomore year of high school to take a theater class I surprised everyone, and perhaps myself most of all, and I signed up to take it for the following year. My first association with stage acting was when I was in the fifth standard, at the annual school concert, my class was putting up the play - 'The Pied Piper of Hamlin' , where i was casted as 'The Pied Piper' himself, it was a matter of great pride for me, being selected as the lead actor among 150 others willing to take my place. Well, I was immature then, time passed I acted in another few plays, it was untill the 9th standard, i wasnt very serious about acting. In the 9th standard I took a more serious approach to acting and dramatics, I auditioned for the street plays, which were to be held at national peace festival, I was choosen as one of the seven actors who took part. I leant a lot working with the other actors, with the talented director and the other crew members. we put up a play named 'Safai' and performed it in various places, without a stage, any microphones or special effects, catering to the street crowd. That was truly an enriching experience.…
