Personal Narrative: Working In A Restaurant
I was going to graduate in six days. I had another job already lined up and had decided this was going to be my last day working in a restaurant. Waiting tables defiantly should not become your career. I see people all the time that do it for a living and cannot fathom how they are able to put up with people seven days a week. I serve at a Mexican restaurant, and it has been one terrible experience after another. It was constant forced smiles at rude patrons, cleaning up after messy eaters, and poor tips from people who had already over-stayed their welcome; until my last day arrived.
My last day started with a genuine smile. I stopped to get lunch on my way to work, and when I arrived they claimed I was ten minutes late. I just thought to

“It would be a waste. Of the 20 pieces they grab only two would make it to their mouth, and the rest would make it seem like we just had newlyweds walk through. We aren’t hosting a wedding today. However, if you insist on the rice I can bring it with a side of broom and dustpan.”
In the end, they angrily decided against the rice and I successfully avoided a mess.
My final table was occupied by two nicely dressed young women; which wouldn’t have been a problem if they had left when we closed. They obviously were catching up each other on what must’ve been at least ten years of unshared experiences. After eight refills and two trips to the restroom apiece, I decided it was time for them to go. Our restaurant doesn’t have much of a policy about after-hours customers, but we defiantly have one when a fire is involved. I went into the back and made myself a nice hot fajita skillet and sat it closed to the door leading to the dining area. I poured a cup of cold water on it which made a large amount of steam that followed me around as I yelled, “Fire!” The two women quickly grabbed their things and made a mad dash for the door. The best part is that they both left me 30% in the midst of their

I am a coupon person. I love coupon via mobile and with limited information. I just brought a piece of furniture that normally cost $3800 and I got this furniture for $1200 from JCPenny’s. I don’t really look for coupons unless I am going to that store. I must admit that I love on particular fast food chain named, Chick-Fil-A. I actually look for those coupons. I have received free minis, and other free things from Chick-Fil-A. At the same time, I carry Michael Kors products, which represent a particular status. I have a $400 dollar purse that I only paid $100. I even have a Michael Kors cell case, but no-one can tell it is a Michal Kors, but it make me feel a certain way. So, I am not sure what type of consumer behavior that I demonstrate.…

The San Antonio Food Bank (SAFB) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to fight hunger in Southwest Texas through food distribution, programs, and education. The SAFB contributes to society by providing food and grocery’s at no cost, to the citizens of Bexar County, and other Southwest Texas communities. On the day of conducting my civil service my teammates and I carpooled with each other to get to the SAFB. Once we arrived we promptly started our service. The service we performed consisted of creating bags of food to be distributed. My teammates and I had the responsibility of making sure each bag had potatoes as well as discarding any potatoes that weren’t fit for consumption.…

Before I began preparing the child’s lunch I ensured that I followed the placement policy which state that before meals “”all tables used during mealtimes were cleaned before the children could be seated”. I also made sure that my own hands were washed and then I cleaned the children’s hands with wet wipes. Before sitting the children down a member of staff made me aware of the child’s dietary requirement and that he wasn’t allowed beef.…

As a Chinese-American, my family expected me to help out at the restaurant while maintaining straight A's in school. But, it wasn't easy; every day, I would report to the restaurant after school and immediately start working. Inside the kitchen, I would pack all the orders into aluminum containers, place them into a brown bag, and insert packets of sauces and utensils. Burns and cuts were common due to the terrible and tearable aluminum containers. Outside at the front desk, I would answer the seemingly endless ringing phones. In many instances, customers had to wait either on the phone or at the front desk for me to find their orders on the computer, even after they showed me where it was on the menu. During lunch hours, the pressure was even…

I will never say that I regret going to Waffle House; I do not. It was one of the best times that I have ever had. My friends are so goofy and wild that anytime with them is never boring. I also connected with Leo, which was amazing. We laughed, cried, and talked about everything and nothing. It turned out that we had a lot of things in common; we liked the same music, books, and even paintings. Also, I found out that he was very open-minded and kind; two qualities that are very important to me. The whole night with my friends and him felt movie-like and I will never forget it. I think that it was a good experience to…

I distinctly remember working part-time at Starbucks, and there realizing all of the economic theories at play. Two of my coworkers worked separately, but towards the same end, exercising their comparative advantage. I later watched as happy hour rolled around, and demand suddenly skyrocketed as our prices dropped. It was deeply impressive to see the seemingly complicated subject of economics so clearly demonstrated in my minimum wage job. I was only a month into my first microeconomics course, but I had already made the decision to declare myself an economics major. I have always been, I think, deeply interested in what drives our world. So it was only natural that in listening to my professor explain the pricing of goods and how labor was…

Over time, many of my peers would join me, as the restaurant’s reputation grew as a fun place to work. Summer waned and turned to fall, management philosophies and the culture around my work changed. I ended up working until 11 pm on school nights and my once friendly coworkers were fired and replaced with unkind, unhappy employees. I was no longer enjoying my job, but I had made a commitment to work until basketball season started in late November. I was determined to stick it out until then. What I had learned from the disappointment of my middle school basketball experience provided guidance for my decision process at work. I was annoyed with my job and tempted to quit. Instead I endured the long hours, unfriendly people, and poor management until I had fulfilled my obligation and could give my two week notice with a clear conscience. I worked hard and kept myself motivated so I was able to get some valuable work experience and stick to my…

A few months ago, we had a few projects going on at my job to help improve our work process. The process we had in place was perfectly fine throughout most of the year. However, during November and December we have a higher volume of work that our current work process was not well suited for. Management kept coming up with ideas to improve the process for the high volume of work we need to get out. However, most of management does not know how things will really play out once they are implemented. During the project I was ask to help implement the new processes that were developed. With my knowledge of our regular process, I was also allowed to point out what would not work and I was given permission to make necessary changes for the project.…
