Personal Narrative: Working In The Workplace
The idea of working had been on my mind for a while, I had a job at Dairy Queen, but it was November going into December so not very many people wanted ice cream, they used employees who needed the hours more than me, so I was out of work until Spring Break. My long-time friend, Abby Minshew, had been looking for a job ever since summer. She waited until after Cross Country to look again, and had shifted her focus from hosting at restaurants and retail to what she wanted to do in the future. She wants to be a geriatric nurse and ended up looking at nearby retirement homes. She applied online to a few, and some of them never got back to her.
One day at lunch, I asked her about her search, and she told me that she found a place called Waltonwood

After Abby talked to Kushbir, I asked if Waltonwood was still hiring. This look of smugness shot across her face, she replied “Yes, we are hiring, stay here, I’ll get someone to interview you right now.” Abby and I looked at each other and were full of joy. We were separated briefly after that when Nick came to take me to a computer to do the questionnaire.
This questionnaire is the weirdest thing I have ever taken. Some of the questions on there were okay, but most of them asked me if I slapped people or used any kind of drug. They tried to trick me by changing up the wording on some of the questions, it was 75 prompts asking the same two things. Also, you have to get a perfect score on it or else they won’t talk to you, and I’ve heard stories about people trying to get in who were perfectly normal, that didn’t get to the interview because of this thing.
I passed! So I got to talk to Nick, which was super easy. Abby told me he liked running, so I emphasized that I liked it too. He told me I got the job, but I applied to the wrong Waltonwood, so he had to fix it in the system. He led me back to Kushbir, who told me the next steps in order to start training, all of which Abby and I did together. I am so grateful to have her as a friend, and I wouldn’t have this job without

As the single child in a family with working parents, I spent the most time of my childhood living and hanging around with my dog. This experience might be one of the reasons that I am very compassionate to animals and sensitive to people’s needs. My voluntary work is in a welfare house called Alenah's home. I love working there because I like seeing the smile face of the children there – even some autism babies don’t smile facially, I believe they can feel the love when being caressed softly.…

This week reminded me how amazing and important my job is. Friday was a busy day at the office; I was rushing to finish my work so I could leave on time. As I was about to leave I received a phone call from a hiring manager (Mark) with NOAA. Mark had questions about the interview process and was calling to speak to one of my colleagues. Unfortunately, my colleague was on vacation and wouldn’t be back for another week. I looked at the clock and realized it was time to go but I could hear the frustration in Mark’s voice. Instead of leaving, I spent almost an hour listening to Mark’s concerns, answering his questions, and I explained how the federal hiring process works. At the end of our conversation, Mark thanked me for my time and he told me…

One thing that sets me apart from the other candidates applying to the University of California is my hard work. I have always been smaller than other kids my age. At 15 years old I was 4’ 10’’ and looked like I was eleven years old. Although this was an advantage at the airport, when I would begin to take off my shoes and the TSA Officer would look at me and say, “Don’t worry twelve and under can keep their shoes on.” I was often discredited for my size. Especially because I played volleyball, a sport known for its height. I constantly struggled to make a team I deserved to be on because people would see my height and automatically think I was not capable. Although my height often led me to feel discouraged and angry it eventually taught hard work.…

On December 3rd, 2015 I was lucky enough to have a job shadow at POET in Sioux Falls. Im very happy that Kirsty Jackson gave me a job shadow here because this was one of the most fun experiences that I ever had. I showed up to my job shadow at around 10:30, and right away I could tell that this was going to be a fun time. Within minutes of being inside the building Katie Wiseman greeted me and showed me down to the room where my job shadow took place. Once we got settled we asked each other a few questions to get to know each other. Once we had been aquatinted she began to tell me all about the work that she does at POET. She told me that she was the talent manager at POET. When I asked a question about Human Resources, she told me about how POET uses a system called C.A.R.E. She explained that CARE is more than just human resources and that it caters to the…

Traveling into the Indian Territory, we were being angrily chased down by three Indians furiously shouting at us. Dashing through the thick forest, the savage Indians were throwing spears and shooting arrows that narrowly missed us. Although neither Gideon nor I was mortally injured, I did suffer from a nick from an arrow piercing near my ear. Thankfully, a group of burly fur traders approached from the side, which frightened the Indians to run away. Acknowledging that Gideon and I were inexperienced travelers in the west, they offered us protection in exchange for some valuable possessions. As a consequence, knowing that they were our best alternative for survival, we gave them our antique gold pocket watches and assumed the identities of novice fur traders. From that point on, we followed them through the west and adopted their skills for efficiently hunting animals and keeping warm in the harsh, cold weather. During one of our rest points, we approached a large Cherokee settlement located in Park Hill in which our group leader was friends with the Cherokee leader John Ross.…

Growing up I had two loving parents, they always wanted the best possible for me. School was always challenging for me. I never liked it, and I never had a good work ethic. It started when I was young, my parents never made me do chores, and they always rewarded me for minimal efforts of work, and it did not help me in the long run. I had a very easy life growing up, but being spoiled does not help when you become an adult. It’s very hard to just gain a work ethic, it takes a lot of time and effort.…

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “To be yourself in a world that is trying to make you something else is a great accomplishment”. A question such as “who am I”? Really gives me the opportunity to differentiate and express who I really am and who I can be. I am not a complex person who thinks the world is against me, nor am I overly sophisticated “know-it-all” who doesn't take time to pay attention to my surroundings. I can't say that I am like every other person because there are certain things that make me a unique individual. What I can say is that I am progressing towards a brighter future.…

Football has always been a big part of my life. As a young boy I would day dream of making insane touchdowns, making tackles that would leave man stuck in the ground, and even winning the heisman trophy. In 7th grade I had begged my mother endlessly to sign me up for pee wee football because she would always worry about the risks of football. After finally getting her to sign me up, we went straight into the season. I chose to play running back because as a 12-year-old I was remarkably fast having timed 5.3 in the 40 yard-dash. After a few weeks in the season we approached the playoffs and found out our opponent for the first round of the playoffs were the jaguars who were undefeated. Our team didn’t have the best chemistry on…

At the beginning of my part-time waitressing position at Isaac’s, I took up more work than I could handle. A Sunday night dinner shift was around the corner, and I was not prepared. Looking back to when I dismissed any forms of constructive criticism or help, I have since realized that accepting advice, taking responsibility, and making changes to my attitude have helped me develop a work ethic where I am more passionate for learning new things. I was still adapting my work environment while also juggling honors and AP school work during my training when my managers instructed me to serve a table on my own for the first time. Furthermore, my newly profound skills at serving have helped a great deal in improving my proficiency at school and everyday life.…

After about 15 minutes of asking me questions, Mr. Almquist said that he would post the list of those who made it on the ASB room’s door in two days. Then, he said that I could go to break. When I left, I found my friends and told them that my interview had gone well. I was relieved that I had gotten this anxiety for the interview off my shoulders, since it had been haunting me for days. Now came the excruciating pain of waiting to see who would be accepted, and who would be rejected.…

For practicum II this semester, I accepted a placement at the Pulaski County Alzheimer’s Respite Center in Somerset, Kentucky. My position included assisting Alzheimer’s patients in group activities, and in functions of daily living. This was a small facility with only six employees total and less than twenty clients attending daily. This agency used a social model of care only so medication were not dispensed on site, and the clients were mostly mobile requiring only a one-person assist. Lunch and an afternoon snack were both provided alone with group activities for the clients throughout the day. This was a new field for me offering many new experiences.…
