Personal Responsibility is defined as someone’s ability to take responsibility for their own actions, accepting the consequences that come from those actions, and understanding that what you do affects, not only you, but also those around you. In my opinion, personal responsibility cannot exist without Accountability and Self Discipline. Within this essay, I’m going to do my best to use what I learned from my childhood, adulthood, and time in the military and tie it into my future as a student at University of Phoenix when it comes to “Personal Responsibility”.
As a child, my mother not only raised me to be responsible, but also accountable. She made sure that I understood that for every choice I made, there were consequences for them. I learned that my choices not only affected me, but also my sisters, my friends, and even my parents. By understanding this, I was able to become a more accountable child and make better choices and decisions. My childhood prepared me for my career in the military, and in the military is where I learned how to become a more disciplined adult. The discipline I lacked as a child, I gained from the military. Follow directions, be organized, make time to study, never be late, do not break the rules, work hard on all tasks until complete, and always meet your deadline. Accountability and discipline is what makes Personal responsibility.
Personal responsibility plays a huge role in college success. Your list of responsibilities are endless. From classroom assignments, group assignments, study time, research time, the chance of failure is high if you slack off on your responsibilities. This is where your accountability and self discipline comes in to play. A person my have children, a job, or other activities that will cut into their school time.
