Personal Responsibility
GEN 200

Mrs. Bonnie Sturgill

In today’s society people are busier than ever and personal responsibility takes on a whole new meaning. Being a college student and raising a family in this era can be a big challenge and requires dependability and commitment. However, adhering to personal responsibility is also having a strong character.
My family relies on me to support them financially as well as to be the husband and father. They depend on me to have a job that pays for the mortgage and additional monthly expenses. They rely on me to fix things around the house, drive them to school or work, and be there for them when they are stressed out or just want to have a good laugh.
Being a successful student requires me to complete assignments on time so that I can get good grades. I’m responsible for staying organized a managing my time effectively. My classmates and I rely on one another to complete team assignments. If I don’t stay focused and studious then I’m apt to fail classes. My success as a student depends on my commitment to a well thought out plan and specific goals to meet.
Marrying my wife is another commitment I’ve made. As her husband I need to be there for her as well my son. We commit as a married couple to raise a family in a nice home, nice neighborhood and have dependable jobs that will support us through the years. In my marriage and as a student I’ve set goals for myself and discussed with my family how I will achieve them.
Achieving goals requires hard work, careful planning and commitment to the plan. When we set goals for ourselves in the classroom, everyone involved must understand the goal, have clear instructions on what their role is in the group, and stay motivated to complete their assigned tasks. My personal responsibility will be to set out a schedule for myself to follow to complete assignments. I will be communicating within the classroom about assignments, getting help when needed. Finally

Is personal responsibility a bygone characteristic of our mothers and fathers? Sometimes, it can feel like this is the case. When an individual has problems plaguing them in their lives, many blame luck, circumstances, or someone else. Many times, these issues have been caused by the individual themselves. We can only hope that, as time goes on, we as a society can realize personal responsibility once again.…

Accountability is normally viewed as being responsible, giving an explanation of your actions, to somebody for something. When you take 100 percent responsibility for holding yourself accountable, your performance will improve, your relationships will thrive, people’s respect for you will increase, you will be a great example for others to follow, and your self-esteem will grow. How is it that in all these areas of your life you can see such dramatic improvement? Because when you hold yourself accountable to doing the things you know you should do, you will distinguish yourself from the crowd. I am convinced if you want to advance your life personally or professionally, you must hold yourself accountable for your actions, responsibilities, and goals. Think about it. Why should it be someone else’s job to make sure you are doing the things that you know you should to be doing? When someone has to hold me accountable, because I failed to do what I should have done, I have a serious conversation with myself. My belief is that no one should have to hold me accountable for my actions, responsibilities and goals. While I appreciate others helping me get better, I am the one that must hold myself to a higher standard than my peers. Make no mistake about it. You cannot achieve any worthwhile personal or professional goal, if you don’t hold yourself accountable. The reason is simple. It’s your life! If you have to be held accountable at work, don’t expect to be promoted or to experience any type of significant career advancement. If you have to be held accountable at home by your parents, roommate or spouse, it will grow old fast and your relationships will deteriorate. Holding yourself accountable is nothing more than following through with YOUR commitments and responsibilities. It’s doing what YOU know YOU should do, when YOU should it. Whether you are 15 years old or 60 years old, let today be the day that you make the commitment to yourself that you will NEVER…

America would not be where it is without the laws that have been placed and the citizens who follow the laws. In order for this to happen the knowledge and acceptance of the laws are needed to establish order. African Americans had been secluded in the past through harsh laws of segregation. Although many believe disobeying the law is morally wrong and if disobeyed a punishment should follow, Martin Luther King’s profound statement, “One has the moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws” (King 420) leads to greater justice for all which is also supported by King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” Jefferson’s “ The Declaration of Independence,” and Lincoln’s “Second Inaugural Address.”…
