Personal Statement for Newman College
Academically, I have always been very determined to achieve the best that I can possibly can and In my younger years, at primary school, my difficulties with maths meant I began to develop a sense of perseverance and determination that helped me to completely overcome the cloud of confusion surrounding the topic and I am proud to say, I still carry this with me and apply it to everything I do. I have studied at Archbishop Temple for four and a half years now and I have definitely enjoyed my time here. I was elected by my form as Form Captain and from it I have learnt responsibility, teamwork and a sense of care towards my fellow students. This role means that I am able to voice any issues or concerns that I or my form have and I can be trusted by my peers to deal with them in a responsible and rational manner. I also currently hold a Prefect position, which shows that I am trusted to work well with other people in my school and I can use initiative when sorting a problem.
I was successful in applying for a work experience placement at Preston Combined Courts and I worked there for a week and learnt about how a court functions as well as gaining an experience in a professional working environment. The placement greatly benefitted me as a person, as I had to overcome nerves and communicate with solicitors and barristers in a responsible manner, which I gained confidence from. I did develop an interest in law and so by taking two strong, academic subjects I am keeping my options open as I hope to go to university after college.
I have also developed skills through other activities, such as Girl Guiding, of which I was a member of for three years, also completing my Baden Powell Award. I have participated in many charity events such as Fun runs and Pyjama day, as I believe in actively trying to help those less fortunate than ourselves. I have been part of the netball team for nearly 3 years and I have developed a love of the

When I was eleven years old I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. I had a hard time coping with the changes in my mood. Part of my healing process consisted of trying many different medications, therapies, and developing the desire to heal. During this time, friends I had for many years pushed me away, and although I felt alone and confused at times, I came out thriving. Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder thought to be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that can result in extreme swings in mood—from manic highs to depressive lows. To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you must have experienced a high period (mania). Bipolar mania is described as an “extreme high,” or feeling unusually great. Most people with bipolar disorder when ill or when symptomatic experience more lows than highs. Unfortunately, the lows I experienced were so extreme that the friends I thought would be by my side through anything chose to follow other kids and use my disorder to bully me creating deeper depression. Initially, I felt stigmatized by my diagnosis. Most people I encountered either didn’t know what bipolar was or how to interact with someone suffering with the disorder. Teachers, peers, and family members had a hard time knowing what to say or how to act around me. I started to feel like I was no longer my own person but just one big disaster and my mood swings became even more extreme as a result. Eventually, I grew tired of feeling sorry for myself and began my quest for the right medication, vitamins, nutrition, psychological and spiritual health and wellbeing. I found my inner strength and courage. I put my energy into school, new friendships and family and started…

A friend recently told me “Don’t let the things you can’t control, control you”. I realized how much this small piece of advice relates to my life as an African American woman. I can’t control the fact that I don’t live with- or even know- my father. I can’t control how society perceives people of color. But I control what I do. I have discovered that I embody the ability to beat the odds given to a black, fatherless girl. I can be who I want to be with hard work and determination.…
