I aspire to become a social worker specialising in children and young people; I have always been interested in social work as I enjoy working with people and would like to support those going through difficulties. The biggest influences for me wanting to do this came from personal experience as I witnessed how effective social work can be in relation to adoption, and also recent failed child protection cases in the media such as Khyra Ishaq and Victoria Climbié. Such cases have influenced me to do this as I would like to improve the quality of people’s lives and ensure they are being cared for and looked after properly. I believe I am suited to do this as I have a naturally caring nature and I am able to support others through problems with an empathetic approach.
I am currently studying a BTEC National Diploma in Health and Social Care. The course primarily focuses on the social care aspect which provides me with the knowledge and skills needed to progress on to an undergraduate degree in social work. A unit I have studied entitled Effective Communication enabled me to develop my communication skills which are essential to be a social worker. I have also studied Equality, Diversity and Rights, Values and Planning in Care and Caring for Children and Young People. The emphasis on legislation in units Equality, Diversity and Rights and also Values and Planning in Care gave me an understanding of the importance of legislation and ethical principles within social care and how these benefit the service users as well as professional practise. Studying Caring for Children and Young People made me more aware of the potential for abuse and the strategies and methods available to minimise the risk of this. In addition to this I hold a St. Johns Ambulance first aid certificate which allows me to treat a person as a result of an accident, injury or ill health.
