Intentional Interviewing Reflection
After reading the first three chapters of Intentional Interviewing and Counseling written by Allen E. Ivey, Mary Bradford Ivey and Carlos P. Zalaquett and after attending the first two classes I have learned many new concepts that interest me and force me to question how I would interact with clients. The textbook and in-class discussions have led me to question the level of boundaries I create with individuals, for example, if I would feel comfortable accepting gifts from clients and how I would handle that situation if it occurred. The first two classes have helped me see myself within the social work field more clearly because I have begun to learn the basics of interviewing and counseling. When learning about the attending behaviours I thought about my personal preferences my comfort zones as well as how much eye contact I prefer when having a conversation with a client or even a friend. After attending class and completing the textbook readings, I already notice myself paying closer attention to how I talk to friends and family and the empathetic and attending behaviour I display. The textbook is helpful to read because of the interactive examples and questions after each section. For example, I …show more content…
In addition, after learning about the common talking and listening errors social workers make has encouraged me to pay attention to how I am interacting with others and what actions I need to stay away from within the field. Before attending university I knew I wanted to become a social worker because I am empathetic towards others and would like to help people for the better. Learning a social workers definition of empathy and how to formulate questions to acknowledge and validate the client’s feelings has helped me understand how to approach others

Throughout the course we learned about different fields of social work, the complications that come with the job, and the different people you will encounter. Thus, changing our thoughts and feelings towards social work. Before taking the class our thoughts about social workers were more or less simple minded. I say this because most of us thought social workers simply deal with children and some consider them “child snatchers”. After getting the opportunity to take the class, we learned there is more to social workers than we thought. Social workers work with different ages, races, religions, and genders. We also learned how social workers work with these different populations (Morales, Sheafor, & Scott, 2010). During class we discussed a…

Professionalism is an integral part of social work it is there for essential that as a social worker I remain committed to my professional development by tracking responsibility for my conduct practice and learning regularly ( BASW Code of ethics 2013). I understand that the professional element of the role is key component of what being a social worker is about and intend to safeguard the reputation by making sure my conduct adheres at all times to the standards set out by the HCPC. I have demonstrated these attributes by undergoing a three day shadowing placement in which I was able to get to grips practically with the nature of the role, whilst simultaneously understanding the importance of maintaining a high level of professionalism and due diligence to the code of ethics .From my lecture notes I have been able to understand the role that professional boundaries and behaviours play in social work. I have had the opportunity to see examples first hand through role play scenarios during class and because of this have made a real comprehensive effort to ensure I am up to date and clear with issues surrounding these. Additionally through further reading I have been able to develop the…

I aim to practice and rehearse all the counselling skills that I have learnt at the lectures and tutorials for greater learning outcomes and a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. I plan to reflect and summarize more accurately and effectively as part of my future learning goals. Summarising helps you sum up the main topics that have come up and you are able to assemble scattered feelings and focus on the most relevant issues. And, reflection enables the client to feel that you are trying your best to understand what they are feeling or saying and it helps them to direct their thoughts and also, they are encouraged to continue talking. For a comfortable environment, I would also like to work on gaining the client confidence and building rapport by finding the right approach and right way to address their issues and for this, I will have to thoroughly go through the theories and micro-skills that I’ve studied so far. In short, in order to enhance my social work practice skills, I aim to continuously work towards rectifying my shortcomings, strengthening my strengths and providing quality services to my…

I will do this through examination of reflective accounts recorded during the placement learning opportunity. I believe that the use of reflection has been very significant in enhancing my personal skills and learning about my own values. I also believe that the course has instilled me with more self awareness and has given me a better understanding of how I am perceived by others. I have learned that through anti oppressive practice, social workers are able to promote inclusion by challenging discrimination and inequalities. In this essay, I will examine the methods, tools, and techniques that I have learned to date. I will conclude by discussing my particular learning needs and plan for the remainder of the course. As part of our preparation for placement, we were required to make a role play on a given scenario in pairs. Each of us had to play the role of the social work student and the service user. We chose to use Miss Allen’s scenario, because we both had experience of working the adults. In preparation for this task, we met twice to clarify our roles and discussed the scenario as we understood it. We also discussed how we were going to assess Miss Allen, and what help we would offer her. The preparation was an important part of our task because it challenged us to think of the interview within its widest context, taking into account the particular needs of Miss Allen, agency policy and procedure and ourselves as student social workers In terms of our personal and professional expectations.…

Whitford’s class was the generalist model. As bachelor level social workers, we will be utilizing the generalist model of social work in our practice. One of the first stages of the generalist model is engagement. I learned the importance of the first initial engagement with a client; in addition, Dr. Whitford taught us different ways that we can engage with diverse groups of people. I also learned the importance of using empathy, warmth, silence, and other social work skills during the engagement stage. I also learned the importance of being aware of my biases, and how my biases can impact my ability to engage effectively with clients. Dr. Togo taught us that we must put our “lenses” on to ensure our biases do not influence how we interact with a client that may have different views than…

As an observer, I was interested and was able to learn a lot from both the client and therapist. I am honored to have learned about the client’s cultural background and her upbringing. With the therapist I was able to feel his anxiety and high energy. I thought that he was stuck too much in his head by asking too many questions in a high speed. I don’t know if I know what the goals for his client are yet, but I’m sure I will get to experience that later. I do feel that he was attentive towards her and was listening to her answers. I was able to catch certain instances where I would do things differently, but again we are all different. I am looking forward to more sessions and be able to embrace and accept my own therapeutic style.…

On 1st March, I was really nervous for EY Tax interview. I had another Accounting quiz on the same day itself and I was not really prepared for the interview. And as if I was not nervous enough, I had to forget to bring my IC along! Thank goodness that the security at EY allowed me to enter. Then I went up to EY and saw another girl from NUS for the same tax interview as well. The personnel handed a short written test question to both of us to write in 15 minutes time.…
