Critical Reflection Of A Social Worker
This assignment is a critical reflection on the in-class roleplay demonstration where I played the role of a social worker from the Department of Human Services (DHS) and another batch-mate played the role of Marika, the client. A social worker is bound to have a complete understanding of the objectives and goals of the process of counselling so as to be able to meet the client needs. (Geldard, 1989)
My aim during the interview was to see how well I am able to demonstrate the behaviours and micro-skills that are required by a social worker while interviewing and empathising with the client. When Marika entered the room, I greeted her and politely asked her to sit down comfortably. I initiated a small talk with her in order to make her feel

usually brings about a very positive impact on the interview and helps in strengthening the client-social worker relationship. Below discussed are some of the micro-skills I demonstrated during the interview-
1. Empathy- I tried to empathise with Marika in the best ways possible. When she said that there is a complete communication breakdown between her and her husband, I said, “I understand you. It must be so difficult to be not able to communicate with your husband.” Genuine empathy helped Marika to talk about her relationship with her husband and her problems more openly.
2. Active Listening through Body Language- I also used non-verbal SOLER technique (Egan, 2002) which means that I faced Marika squarely, had an open posture, leaned towards her and maintained a good eye contact with her throughout the conversation. This helped Marika to feel at ease and she looked confident and more relaxed. It proved to be an effective technique in demonstrating that I was paying complete attention to my

I aim to practice and rehearse all the counselling skills that I have learnt at the lectures and tutorials for greater learning outcomes and a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. I plan to reflect and summarize more accurately and effectively as part of my future learning goals. Summarising helps you sum up the main topics that have come up and you are able to assemble scattered feelings and focus on the most relevant issues. And, reflection enables the client to feel that you are trying your best to understand what they are feeling or saying and it helps them to direct their thoughts and also, they are encouraged to continue talking. For a comfortable environment, I would also like to work on gaining the client confidence and building rapport by finding the right approach and right way to address their issues and for this, I will have to thoroughly go through the theories and micro-skills that I’ve studied so far. In short, in order to enhance my social work practice skills, I aim to continuously work towards rectifying my shortcomings, strengthening my strengths and providing quality services to my

The first competency that is discussed is: identifying as a professional social worker and conducting oneself accordingly. With this comes a heavy responsibility, not only the way a practitioner appears, how they dress or speak but also the way in which they conduct themselves fall into this category. Dressing appropriately to the agency that have enlisted the workers services, being aware of various bias or preconceived notions (often misconceptions) about a particular person or group and having the capacity to put these feelings and thoughts aside to help it crucial. Not only this but having the knowledge to effectively advocate for a client’s needs, understanding and abiding by professional boundaries, and making use of one’s peers, whether that be through supervision or consultation are key in this regard. It is also important to constantly be learning and participating in self-reflection as well as self-correction to grow in experience and maturity (giving takin help 21).…

In a supervision session I supported Jean, a care worker, who was finding it difficult to focus on her work because of difficulties she was experiencing at home. Although we had agreed an agenda for this meeting beforehand, when Jean came into the room she was very agitated and immediately raised the subject of her home situation. I felt that it would be impossible to progress with other issues until we had discussed this and looked at how it was affecting her. Although I appreciated myself that this was not a counselling but a work supervision situation, I was able to use some of the communication skills that I had…

The interest I have in human and social services derives from my desire to assist individuals in my community suffering from adverse effects. I believe in order to eliminate the stigmas associated with human and social services careers; one must proactively and collaboratively be engaged with the individuals utilizing services and colleagues. Collectively, this will encompass effective, efficient, and responsive forms of communication, as the persons in need of assistance possess diverse perspectives of adequate treatment. The populations that intend to assist are those suffering from mental illness and other adverse effects such as rehabilitationwhich inhibits their ability to function properly in society. Societal perception of these individuals…

During the first year of the course I have become more aware of the importance of personal and professional development. I agree with Thompson (2002), who states that the development of personal and professional skills is fundamental to becoming a competent social worker and making the transition from student to practitioner. Therefore professional development is essential to social work students and practitioners to increase…

Reflecting back on this course, my impression on the field of Social Work embraces that this fields rests far more diverse and incriminated into society than I previously thought; “Not only do they help the individuals cope with the situation at hand, they advocate for them and seek out valuable resources and other means of support for the affected person(s)” (XXX). Prior to this course, I detained a misconception that social workers predominantly counseled individuals, when in reality, social workers integrate collaboration, advocacy, investigating, counseling, planning, monitoring, and organizing into their occupational responsibilities. Assisting in a vast array of societal facets, social workers rely on theories and frameworks to pilot…

She mentioned that she asked one of the staff members a question regarding the resources they agency uses to help their client, but the staff’s response left her unsatisfied. When she shared this experience, it sounds to me that the question she asked was too generic and not specific, therefore, I did some clarification just to understand specifically what she wants to learn. I was glad to give her a feedback regarding the question she asked because I am doing my placement at an employment agency too, and I am knowledgeable about the question she asked. First, I explain to her that organizations have policies…

The difficult part was the service users that I worked with had their own diverse values and that is where I experienced some tensions and dilemmas as to what was the right thing to be doing came up. Different people had different views on what creates risk. In my position as a Social Worker it needs the ability to identify and balance values of benefits and harms, taking into consideration where one’s own value base impacts on the decision making and where we can support people to achieve the best outcomes, using professional rather than personal values. However we are guided by the purpose of the organisation we are employed in, as well as the legal and policy parameters of our society. Additionally, it would appear that the focus of social…

My client was 52years of old lady who was looking after her 72 years of old mother. She (mother of the client) was suffering dementia. The client hast two kids who are studying. As she was working seven days, she wasn’t getting time to ventilate her feeling to anyone. Actually she came to me with complaints of stress.
