Social Work Reflection
The difficult part was the service users that I worked with had their own diverse values and that is where I experienced some tensions and dilemmas as to what was the right thing to be doing came up. Different people had different views on what creates risk. In my position as a Social Worker it needs the ability to identify and balance values of benefits and harms, taking into consideration where one’s own value base impacts on the decision making and where we can support people to achieve the best outcomes, using professional rather than personal values. However we are guided by the purpose of the organisation we are employed in, as well as the legal and policy parameters of our society. Additionally, it would appear that the focus of social …show more content…
I have explored alternative approaches – behaviourist and solution focussed and have been able to incorporate these within my practice and these are delivered in a relationship based way. I can recognise the impact this has on my emotional well-being and am aware of ‘vicarious trauma’ and the feelings of anxiety this can bring to my work. Vicarious Trauma or ‘Compassion fatigue’ is the personal damage and stress that is caused by helping or wanting to help a person involved in a traumatic situation, Community Care …show more content…
Social Workers in the 21st century are more likely to work within a ‘huge and diverse’ range of stings in an often ‘complicated multi-professional network’. In addition to this, those employed with a local government are likely to be subjected to working amidst a backdrop of national agendas fuelled by public concerns over high profile cases and serious case reviews’, Ruch et al (2010:24). These pressures are added to the day to day work of a Social Worker engaging with distressed people and distressing situations and practice that involve providing interventions that deal with both the psychological and social difficulties which the people they are working with are experiencing. The work entailing social issues facing the service user often appear to be the more straight forward part of the work, but the Social Worker will also be dealing with emotions and feelings requiring the Social Worker to have the necessary skills to be able to draw on ‘internal, often unconscious dynamics to make sense of these professional encounters’, Ruch et al (2010:26)

    Reflective case study

The assignment is intended to discuss a case I worked on whilst on my final placement and use an analytic stance to discuss the interaction and interventions used with the service user. In order to maintain confidentiality and anonymity of the service users in this case study I will be using pseudonyms for all people involved and mentioned in relation to this case. The assignment will demonstrate professional judgement, accountability of a social worker and the statutory requirements of protection and intervention when working with vulnerable adults. The case study will focus on my work with Sarah throughout my time on placement and assess my principal interventions as well as locating my work within the wider discourses around risk deploying both recovery and exchange models. It will also highlight the strengths and limitations within the process of recovery. Within this case study I will aim to describe and analyse the practice, theories and values that have emerged by carrying out this piece of work. The assignment will critically evaluate my practice with specific reference to the social work skills used. By reflecting on my practice I hope to demonstrate how I have considered issues such as power imbalances and social injustice and how this consideration has assisted me to work in an anti-oppressive, non-judgemental way with the service user involved. With reference to this particular case study I will also demonstrate to the reader the power imbalance that existed between the professionals in terms of their approach. This was clearly evident in relation to the social model approach versus the medical model approach. Drawing on my observation and the experience of working within an inter-professional team I will provide critical appraisal of the issues and barriers that existed. I will also compare, contrast and evaluate the medical and social model of mental health and mental disorder by referring to appropriate literature and…

As stated by the man in the video, a Human Services degree offers a wide range of opportunities in a variety of settings. Those considering a career in this field have a chance to make a difference in the lives of others while experiencing a sense of personal fulfillment, as well as, aiding people from diverse cultures. The man indicates he is a Christian and Christian’s have a calling to serve people that the world overlooks. Several aspects of this type of degree interest me. One is that I can relate to many situations that others are enduring (to some degree). I guess others would say, I have a soft heart for people that are suffering.…

As part of my studies in the MA social Work and Law module I attended Hull Crown Court. During the visit I witnessed three sentencing sessions. The interest I have in human and social services derives from my desire to assist individuals in my community suffering from adverse effects. I believe in order to eliminate the stigmas associated with human and social services careers; one must proactively and collaboratively be engaged with the individuals utilizing services and colleagues. Collectively, this will encompass effective, efficient, and responsive forms of communication, as the persons in need of assistance possess diverse perspectives of adequate treatment. The populations that intend to assist are those suffering from mental illness and other adverse effects such as rehabilitationwhich inhibits their ability to function properly in society. Societal perception of these individuals…

This assignment is a critical reflection on the in-class roleplay demonstration where I played the role of a social worker from the Department of Human Services (DHS) and another batch-mate played the role of Marika, the client. A social worker is bound to have a complete understanding of the objectives and goals of the process of counselling so as to be able to meet the client needs. (Geldard, 1989)…

Reflecting back on this course, my impression on the field of Social Work embraces that this fields rests far more diverse and incriminated into society than I previously thought; “Not only do they help the individuals cope with the situation at hand, they advocate for them and seek out valuable resources and other means of support for the affected person(s)” (XXX). Prior to this course, I detained a misconception that social workers predominantly counseled individuals, when in reality, social workers integrate collaboration, advocacy, investigating, counseling, planning, monitoring, and organizing into their occupational responsibilities. Assisting in a vast array of societal facets, social workers rely on theories and frameworks to pilot…

As another example, one of my group member as well share her feelings regarding the challenges she is experiencing at her placement. She mentioned that she asked one of the staff members a question regarding the resources they agency uses to help their client, but the staff’s response left her unsatisfied. When she shared this experience, it sounds to me that the question she asked was too generic and not specific, therefore, I did some clarification just to understand specifically what she wants to learn. I was glad to give her a feedback regarding the question she asked because I am doing my placement at an employment agency too, and I am knowledgeable about the question she asked. First, I explain to her that organizations have policies…

The aim of this essay is to explore and outline the role of the social worker. As Mark Dole highlighted, the role of a social worker is a complex and misunderstood role within a contemporary society. The role of the social worker ranges from being a wise eyed idealist to a realist. Social work is misunderstood by the public and media. Mark Dole in his book on skills required for social worker (2011) quotes Margaret Thatcher who famously said: ‘anyone could be a social worker: all that was needed was time on their hands some life experience’. This essay is aimed at outlining and explaining how complex this role is, and challenging it is to define social work.…

The tasks completed during my BSW senior year field placement with the Department of Social Services varied. Conducting home visits with my supervisor while observing client behaviors in the foster home was a task I completed frequently. During these visits, my supervisor introduced me to clients and displayed how to properly conduct client in home assessment forms. These assessment forms would contain information pertaining to the client’s living conditions in their foster homes and would document the physical and psychological needs of the client to help them improve independent living skills; better preparing them for transition out of care. Also, I was allowed the opportunity to attend a school meeting discussing a client’s 504 behavioral plan. During this activity, it was discussed why the client was placed in the alternative school rather than being placed in regular school. After the meeting, the team concluded that the client was misplaced and that the client would developmentally progress within the school’s environment. This activity allowed me to see the importance of advocating for clients. This client’s worker did not accept the client being placed in alternative school and therefore did everything in her power to be placed back in regular school where the client best fit. Lastly, while interning at the Department of Social Services, I spent time updating Child Tracking Forms and Psychological Evaluation Reference lists; contacting different organizations exploring the services they provide clients who have experienced trauma. Completing this activity help me improve my ability to find local resources that will assist with advocating for clients. The activities completed while interning at the Department of Social Service has better prepared me for working with diverse populations within the community.…
