Throughout the course we learned about different fields of social work, the complications that come with the job, and the different people you will encounter. Thus, changing our thoughts and feelings towards social work. Before taking the class our thoughts about social workers were more or less simple minded. I say this because most of us thought social workers simply deal with children and some consider them “child snatchers”. After getting the opportunity to take the class, we learned there is more to social workers than we thought. Social workers work with different ages, races, religions, and genders. We also learned how social workers work with these different populations (Morales, Sheafor, & Scott, 2010). During class we discussed a…
This assignment is a critical reflection on the in-class roleplay demonstration where I played the role of a social worker from the Department of Human Services (DHS) and another batch-mate played the role of Marika, the client. A social worker is bound to have a complete understanding of the objectives and goals of the process of counselling so as to be able to meet the client needs. (Geldard, 1989)…
Today was my first day back. Today started out fast pace. I knew that it would though. It seem seems like there is never a break. As soon as I walked in the door, I…
The purpose of social work is to demonstrate to society the necessary appropriateness of social welfare. Society operates from a capitalist standpoint, which in turn establishes a hierarchy within economic class, race, and gender. Social work is a profession that addresses social problems with empathy, empirical knowledge, and respect for humanity. Furthermore, the orientation of the core values of the social work profession was designed as an instructional tool and requires that social workers meet specific requirements that…
It has always been my dream to have a substantial positive impact on the world that I live in. Since as far back as I can remember the desire to help others has dominated not only my thought process, but also my actions. I believe that this desire is what has led me to pursue the social work field. The job of a social worker is complicated and very wide-reaching, but I believe the ultimate job description of a successful social worker can be summed up with one word; help. The ultimate goal of the social worker is to positively affect the lives of their individual clients and ultimately the society in which they live. I have learned that social workers operate at three levels which ultimately allows them to successfully promote the change that they desire. These levels are: Micro social work, which involves working with individuals; mezzo social work, which involves working with families or other small groups; and macro social work which involves working with agencies. (Gillies, Ester.). When I first began this course, I was only cognizant of social work at the micro level. Through the readings and videos that I have had the opportunity to review, I am now aware that it is impossible to be an effective social worker without incorporating all three facets of the social work profession. My initial vision of being in an office working independently with a singular client has been forever changed. I am now aware of the immense responsibility social workers have to not only affect the individuals and families that walk through their doors, but also the impact they must have on the community and society that these individuals and families interact with daily, in order to accomplish real change.…
I have worked with the aboriginal community for a few years and would like to learn more. I felt that doing research and a paper with regards to Aboriginal people would be relevant and a great learning opportunity to write a paper with regards to this topic. Please see below a rough outline that I thought I would look at with regards to writing a paper. I’m not sure if this was exactly what you were looking for.…
I have been asked to compare and contrast my own definitions of health and illness compared to the definitions I would provide for a group of low socio-economic people living with a disability. I was told to use the Gibbs Reflective Cycle (1998), for this exercise. I decided to focus on Indigenous Australians living with a disability for an example of a low socio-economic class.…
The tasks completed during my BSW senior year field placement with the Department of Social Services varied. Conducting home visits with my supervisor while observing client behaviors in the foster home was a task I completed frequently. During these visits, my supervisor introduced me to clients and displayed how to properly conduct client in home assessment forms. These assessment forms would contain information pertaining to the client’s living conditions in their foster homes and would document the physical and psychological needs of the client to help them improve independent living skills; better preparing them for transition out of care. Also, I was allowed the opportunity to attend a school meeting discussing a client’s 504 behavioral plan. During this activity, it was discussed why the client was placed in the alternative school rather than being placed in regular school. After the meeting, the team concluded that the client was misplaced and that the client would developmentally progress within the school’s environment. This activity allowed me to see the importance of advocating for clients. This client’s worker did not accept the client being placed in alternative school and therefore did everything in her power to be placed back in regular school where the client best fit. Lastly, while interning at the Department of Social Services, I spent time updating Child Tracking Forms and Psychological Evaluation Reference lists; contacting different organizations exploring the services they provide clients who have experienced trauma. Completing this activity help me improve my ability to find local resources that will assist with advocating for clients. The activities completed while interning at the Department of Social Service has better prepared me for working with diverse populations within the community.…

I found this project to be challenging at times. It seemed very unclear to me in the beginning and overwhelming, however, as time when on it seemed to become more clear. During the first group meeting we all established the areas that interested us and from there we assigned research topics accordingly. It turned out that we were slightly off base on how the project was to be completed and when we met for the second time as a group we reassigned topics to group members. I was given the topics of discharged planning, who would be part of the multidisciplinary team members and community supports. I also worked with Sierra to develop a teaching and learning plan. I contacted Connie Polling, the Renal Social Work at KBRH and set up a time…
The term ‘Social Work’ is interpreted differently by different groups of people in society as different activities aimed towards helping people solve their problems. Groups such as teachers, nurses and doctors identified themselves as ‘Social workers’, in so doing gave a broad definition of Social Work but failed to identify some of the more detailed aspects of the social work role. Thompson (2009). These are statutory duties which investigated children who were abused, supervising children who were cared for by the local authority and applying for a person to be locked up in an infirmary when their mental state presented a serious risk of harm to themselves others.…
I am currently employed as a medical social worker in case management department. My interest is to remain in the healthcare setting as a hospital medical social worker. Being a breast cancer and witnessing several family members’ battle with terminal illness has made me want to make a difference in the lives of patients and their caregivers. I know from my personal experience how hospitalization can alter lives financially and mentally. It is important that social workers know their patients and support systems. Obtaining appropriate information from patients and caregivers help social workers meet the needs of patients and improve their quality of life.…
