I wait patiently as my fellow students' eyes move around my sculpture, scanning it, trying to figure out what does and does not fit. Standing alongside my work, I gaze around the room at their tired faces. I cannot help but feel like I am on display, as well as my art. After many grueling nights and endless amounts of caffeine, my piece is complete. I am proud of what I have created. When I stand before my peers with my sculpture on display, it is my job to defend my art and persuade them to appreciate it. It is very satisfying to have finished – but the road to its completion certainly came with its ups and downs.
Our task was to create a wood sculpture. I was a student majoring in fashion design, and fortunately for me, …show more content…
Since I was creating my sculpture from wood, I had to start by cutting the beginnings of my art from a large board of wood, which is unlike anything I have ever done before. With a twenty-minute overview of how to handle the saw, I hardly felt prepared. I took my piece of wood, traced out all of my forms and approached the saw. The saw had a thin metal blade and it could be set to pulsate at different speeds. I later learned, it could bend and break very easily as well. I slowly slid my board into the saw and began cutting along the lines I drew. The process was moving along nicely until I could no longer cut in a straight line. All of a sudden the blade snapped in half and flew somewhere in the room never to be seen again. In that moment, I knew this process would not be as smooth as I had hoped. I kept trying and eventually learned how to maneuver the saw to create the edges and finish all the pieces needed to create my sculpture. After many challenging hours of constructing, endless sanding and fine-tuning the wood, I finally finished my sculpture. The challenges I faced during its creation made me all the more proud of my accomplishment and ready to accept the critique of my peers.
My experience with this project and others throughout my time in design school taught me that trying something new may not always work out the way I had initially hoped, but by working through those challenges, I learned
