A personality disorder exists when traits are
Inflexible/rigid/ not malleable to the environment/ situation
Maladaptive
Someone is considered to have a personality disorder when their traits cause personal stress or distress to others around them.
*hard to diagnose, people with personality disorders rarely recognize having a problem. > the world is wrong, not them.
DSM classifies personality disorders according to three clusters
Cluster A (odd, eccentric)
Cluster B (dramatic/emotional/erratic disorders) closest link to risk of addiction
Made up of: antisocial personality disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder,
Histrionic Personality Disorder and Narcissistic Personality Disorder
Cluster C
Clusters improve interrater reliability,> more successful diagnosis.

Persuasive pattern of emotionality and attention seeking *seen in one or more of the following
Uncomfortable when not the center of attention
Inappropriately provocative behaviour
Shallow/shifting expression of emotions
Uses physical appearance for attention
Exaggerates emotions
Conversations lack detail/depth
Easily influenced by others/circumstances
Usual unset early adulthood
Also noted to be excitable, emotional, shows extraverted behaviour.
In endless need of reassurance.
Does not handle delayed gratification well.
Risk Factors for addiction
*Social
Need for attention/want to please others, -> this may increase histrionic individuals willingness to experiment with drugs/addictive behaviors
Extravert/crave stimulation-> enjoyment of social settings may act as secondary rout to addictive substances/behaviours
Poor decision making- diminished ability to delay gratification
