Sometimes an artist creates a piece that is rather complicated to decipher its meaning. This style is known as non-representational or abstract. Non-representational art doesn’t rely on the use of visual references of the world in order to give meaning. When looking into this kind of art, one must use their own interpretations in order to decipher the meaning of a piece and what the artist was communicating. In my HL Visual Arts Class, I wanted to express the meaning of darkness that other artworks I made contained. I used very dark color lines to create an abstract cube on top of a grey background. This artwork didn’t necessarily represent anything, however, for me as the artist, the cube meant the room in which I exhibit my artworks to viewers from my school. Wanting to know if other individuals would get the meaning of this work, I asked my peers. None of them said that they saw the same thing that I had initially seen in this artwork. The answers were very different every time a new person was asked, which showed that each person’s perspective caused them to interpret things differently, their perspective drove them to achieve a different conclusion than all of the others. After that I decided to ask people to solve a very simple algebraical problem. Everyone did the same thing in order to solve the problem, meaning they all shared some kind of knowledge that allowed them to achieve to the same conclusion in the same way. This shows how perspective may be less or more essential in certain disciplines. As it was seen through the arts everybody had a different interpretation of what my piece meant and everybody used their perspective to do that. However in the math problem there wasn’t a personal perspective involved, but rather, something they have been taught in order to solve these types of problems. While pursuing knowledge, it depends on
