Racism has become one of the major problems all over the world. People suffer through discrimination because they have differences among others such as different cultures, different skin colors and different status. If you are one of them, will you feel lucky and happy for the chance to get your driver’s license? Of cause you do, but in same time you will also feel shame on your license because it is marked you different from others. When you show the license to others, you are telling them that you are illegal immigrant, and you are special. Could you imagine how will other people react? In next few minutes, I will explain to you that why the State of North Carolina is involved in discrimination that distinguishing those illegal immigrants as the difference by issuing them specially marked driver’s license.
So, why does North Carolina decide to issue the driver’s license with pink stripe for the illegal immigrants? This case note will examine the 1967 landmark Supreme Court case of Loving v. Virginia. The Loving v. Virginia case touched on constitutional principles including equality, federalism, and liberty. Just over 30 years ago, it was a crime for interracial couples in Virginia to marry, or to live as husband and wife. Prior to the 1967 case of Loving v. Virginia, many states had laws that banned the intermarriage of whites with black or other minorities. The United States has a long history of the existence of anti-miscegenation laws that forbid interracial marriage. The case presents the constitutional question whether a statutory scheme adopted by the State of Virginia to prevent marriages between persons solely on the basis of racial classifications violates the Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment. The right that is guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, contains the right to be treated the same, legally, as others in the same situation. The Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth amendment of the U.S. Constitution forbids states from denying any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws . The equal protection jurisprudence in the United States has evolved greatly. Well-known cases covering the Equal Protection Clause are Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, considering the de-segregation of public schools and Korematsu v. United States in 1944, when the Court first articulated a strict scrutiny standard for laws based on race-based distinctions. This strict scrutiny standard was applied again in the Loving v. Virginia case in 1967. In 1967, the Supreme Court’s had to decide if these anti-miscegenation statutes were unconstitutional. The Supreme Court declared, in a unanimous decision, Virginia's anti-miscegenation statute, the "Racial…

The statutes were clearly drawn upon race-based distinctions because the legality of certain behavior turned on the races of the people engaging in it. Equal Protection requires that classifications based on race be subject to intense scrutiny for this reason. The Equal Protection Clause of the United States Constitution prohibits classifications drawn by any statute that constitutes subjective and hateful discrimination. The fact that Virginia would focus on bans of interracial marriages involving whites is proof that the miscegenation statutes exist for no other purpose other than the independent goals of those based on racial discrimination. This case was essential in providing a firm foundation, that it is not possible, for a state law to be valid, which makes the criminality of an act depend upon the race of the actor.…

(civilrights.org, 2013). Are you kidding me? The more I read about the outrage against the law the angrier I become! An article published by the Washington Post made it seem like we were being ridiculous and unnecessarily harsh with lower-income minorities. (Horwitz, May 23). Why in the world wouldn’t the entire United States implement this procedure? It’s not racism, it’s completely fair. People want equality until it doesn’t benefit them. The article went on to say “Opponents say that the laws were designed to target people more likely to vote Democratic.” Give me a break. It’s to ensure that legal, productive members of society are the one’s casting their votes. It’s common sense. It’s not to discriminate. People 18 and older should have some sort of proper identification. Like I said before, this is obviously not a black and white situation. There are always going to be people that were dealt a bad hand or have a special circumstance. Make it easier for those people to share their stories and obtain identification, not change the law to let just anyone walk in and vote. The article also mentioned that Texas also allowed concealed handgun license to be used as proper identification. How very Texan of…

It is difficult to believe that there are still laws around that discriminate even if it is indirect. Even though there is much evidence that these voter ID laws disenfranchise African Americans they still don’t change. There is minimal evidence of widespread voter fraud for the need of voter ID laws, it can be said that the voter ID laws are for the purpose of political advantage just like redistricting. The Republican Party is the main benefactor towards these laws as African Americans being the main group being affected by these laws are more likely to vote Democrat. This issue is yet to be resolved. As many states still have these laws and there is no need for them as the data suggests there is minimal voter fraud. These laws need to be resolved as the 2016 election looms and the laws are affecting more people, the transgender community is also being disenfranchised due to voter ID laws “The report released this month found that more than 34,000 transgender Americans across eight states could be prevented from voting due to restrictive voter ID laws”(Miller, New report finds voter ID laws disenfranchise transgender…

PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a psychiatric disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events such as the military combat, natural disasters, terrorism incidents, or any major tragedy. This is common in the life of veterans and is the leading cause of suicide among veterans. A VA patient who survived in Baghdad shares his experience with PTSD and explains how he knew he had this disability. Many veterans speak out about this issue and describe their continuous anger, alcohol addiction, and constantly wanted to fight. They usually feel very isolated and distant from their loved ones. One patient states, “PTSD involves rocketing into extreme states of stress re-activity; in the form of terror, rage, and uncontrollable impulses, and plunging into equally extreme states of being shut-down—exhaustion, emotional numbing, despair, and dissociation”. PTSD is about having fear and anxiety, allowing veterans to rage with anger and different emotion. There are many factors to PTSD, which affects others in different ways; or example, using video games to keep them occupied, spending money due to the lack of impulse control because of changes in their brain, and even not obtaining another job.…
