Studying Abroad

Studying abroad has many benefits and can open many doors and possibilities for those who take advantage of the opportunity. I want to have the chance as a college student to study abroad and experience a new culture and open my mind to new experiences and challenges. Although there may be some difficulties studying in a foreign country I believe the advantages are far greater.

Studying abroad offers one the chance to learn a new culture by allowing a person to immerse himself in that culture. A semester or a year abroad gives a person enough time to really learn and become comfortable with another culture. It is enough time for one to become comfortable enough and develop relationships and make friends. These relationships can last one a lifetime. Also, this would be enough time to completely learn a foreign language. True, it can be scary to go to a country and not know the language, but one will be with other students and being totally immersed in the culture it should take no time to learn the language. By the end of the experience one can be fluent in another language

This is also a good opportunity to learn to be independent. Parents will not be there to fix any problems one might have. It will be up to the student to work things out on their own. This independence can be a true character builder and definitely set one up to be successful after college.

One of the most beneficial aspects of studying abroad is the positive affect it will have on the resume. Employers, as well as, Graduate Schools look favorably on an international study experience. Studying abroad helps students to become more mature, self sufficient and have an international view on subjects. These qualities are all very attractive in the workplace.

There are challenges to studying abroad as well. For example, one can experience culture shock which can be overwhelming. However, if prepared for this one can adjust to it.

Studying in a different country can not only help students achieve more in their adult lives, but ultimately change their life for the better from the experience. Adaptation and tolerance is one benefit a student can gain from studying abroad. By living first hand in a unfamiliar place in allows you to learn empathy and understanding from those different from you. Independence and Confidence are traits commonly reported from students who have lived this experience. Typically a student will travel alone of with a few other friends, being put into new, sometimes scary situations that will for them to think differently then they may have before. By encountering these differences they are allowed to better understand not only the challenges other countries are put in, but the challenges of our own country and the world as a whole. The Study Aboard experience has also been reported to be helpful for students with their careers, finding jobs and marketing themselves better to potential employers. There have always been various matters of concern in our modern society, and one topical issue is studying abroad. According to Scott (1998), studying overseas has become a global trend, especially in English – speaking countries. As a matter of fact, when people’s standards of living improve, they often think about increasing their knowledge so they could have a better life. To do that, they are eager to study for higher education (i.e: university education) overseas. However, everything has its advantages and disadvantages, and studying abroad is not an exception. To my way of thinking, the advantages of studying abroad far outweigh the disadvantages. This essay is divided into 3 parts. The first part will discuss the academic benefits, and then introduce the effects of studying abroad for interpersonal development; the latter will describe future job opportunities of studying abroad.…

If you study abroad, you will study using a foreign language, which will be quite different from studying in your native language. You will study with friends from that country, and in many cases, you will study with friends from other countries as well, since many large universities abroad have many foreign students. Studying itself may be different. You may be required to read a lot; you will probably be expected to participate in discussions or/and make presentations in class; you may learn through doing something rather than just by reading and memorizing; you may need to write reports or do projects. In other words, you can expect something different in your learning experience, which you might find meaningful.…
