Every day in the United States animals are neglected, beaten, or forced to struggle. Left in unsanitary conditions with no food or water, they have little hope as they live out their days without the compassion they deserve. Some animals, found and rescued, are given the chance to experience how good or bad life and humans can be. It is our job to be the voice for creatures who cannot speak up for themselves. As a nation, we need to make it our priority to come together and ensure the safety of our beloved pets. We must fight for these abused animals, and severely punish heartless owners. This is not something that is done easily or without regret by the workers working within these agencies, but unfortunately, this is the current state of animal control in our country. Animal shelters are non-profit organizations which means they rely on donations or grant to fund programs. These grants and donations help provide animals with the care that they need like warm blankets and cages. Private animal shelters are known as limited-access meaning they do not euthanize animals to make room for more animals, but instead they typically turn down new animals until they are bought. The main argument that is thought of when discussing animal shelters is “Animal shelters are pet prisons” (“Learning to Give”). Passive animal abuse is associated with neglect of any kind, like starvation or improper shelter or care for the animal.
