Millions of Syrians are taking dangerous risks in order to seek safety. Millions risk crossing cold oceans and prefer to leave it all behind if it keeps their family safe. Millions of children had to stop going to school simply because it was no longer safe. But now it seems like not even their homes are safe. Is one not suppose to feel comfort in their own home? if today will be the day you die? However it does not stop there. “Over twelve million Syrian refugees are seeking safety and over half of them are children (“Worldvision”)”. Sadly the numbers only keep growing as things keep getting worse. “This crisis is so bad that not even Hurricane Katrina, Haiti's earthquake in or the Indian Ocean Tsunami combined cannot beat the number of people affected in Syria(“Worldvision”)”. Most do not want to leave their homes behind, however if they decide to stay then they will be in tremendous danger. That is why millions of people would rather take a risk than to keep living in fear. Fear, in which, no one should have to feel. No one should wonder whether they live or die on their way to school. To wonder if today is the day you get shot or bombed. To wonder when you will eat or drink water. To wonder when it will be safe enough to come out from your hiding spot. To wonder what safety actually feels like. Because many Syrians have been surrounded by violence that they no longer know what it means to feel safe, warmth, and comfort.
However, the doors are beginning to close because of the terrorist attack in Paris, France. Countries are beginning to raise questions as to who they are helping. Many argue that if they allow more refugees into their nations then they would live in fear. Others argue that it is not their war so why should they help? Others fear terrorist attacks. “Over half of the States in America do not want anything to do with refugees and feel it is best if they stay away”. (_____). And now more than ever many Americans have more statements to back them up. For example, Americans faced a terrorist attack on December 2, 2015 which took place in San Bernardino. However, it was only considered a terrorist attack after finding that one of the suspects was loyal to ISIS. However this attack would have not been possible without the help of an American who also took part of this attack. Not only was the attack accomplished with the help of an American citizen, but the weapons were also “illegal” and did not belong the ones who took part of the attack (“Heavy”).
One may fear allowing refugees in just because many are quick to label call them as terrorist.
But there are certain measures the nation can take in order to minimize such actions. Background checks can be required. One can also limit their freedom such as the “right to bare arms” and forbid it to non-citizens (Constitution of the United States). By limiting and monitoring refugees then one can know who the refugees really are. If necessary then only allow children to come in. Because children should not have to face the fear of being targeted or being abused.
How long will Americans wait for things to make a drastic turn; just to realize that other people’s lives matter to. In World War ll many countries were blinded and never believed of the terrible things the Jewish lived through. For years many lived in ignorance and decided it was best to let them deal with their own problems. In 1994 the Rwandan Genocide also sparked while some never thought much of it. Due to such actions hundreds of lives were lost. How many innocent people have to be killed, abused, or tortured for us to take a
stand?
Millions of refugees are facing discrimination and are thought to be terrorists. Innocent people are looked upon as monsters who are ready to kill anyone who does not agree with them. When in fact children can not go to school nor go outside to play because they run the risk of being killed. It is so bad that they do no longer feel safe in there house. Many face tremendous fear. They question if they will live or if there loved ones will die. Hundreds of innocent people are currently living in fear; fear which is far worse than the fear Americans faced on December 2, 2015. It is time to take a stand and make a difference. To stop living in ignorance and help save a life. To at least consider the lives of the children. So that the children may know what it feels like to feel safe, comfort and warmth. They to are human beings and have feelings.
