In 2015 the United States Government opened up all military positions to women (Kube and Silva). This step for women joining the ranks of our military has commenced talks of women signing up for the draft when they turn eighteen like men have done since 1980 (Barno). Many people believe that women registering for the draft will encourage equality, while many others believe that their duty is at home during times of war. Women registering for the draft is a highly debated topic. There are many advantages to women being in the draft. Including women helping the United States have better armed forces. During the Vietnam War the draft became very unpopular and was disbanded in 1973 (Barno). With the military being at an all time low of 0.4% of the population. That comes out to about 1,300,000 military members. The United States may be considered to have one of the best militaries in the world. Having women sign up for the draft can help recruit and keep the best qualified military individuals. Including a woman’s duty to stay behind during times of war. It is the historic tradition of war for women to stay behind and keep the country stable. They do this in many ways. One way is by raising and keeping families together as typically the men are fighting overseas (Eden). Another duty given to women during war is to join the workforce which is seen as patriotic. During World War II between 1940-1945 the amount of women in the workforce increased from 27%-37%. Women accounted for 1% of the Aircraft Industry before the war, and by 1943 they made up 65%.
