in a scientific lab, all of their ideas are just guesses of what could be. UFOs are defined as:
A UFO is the reported sighting of an object or light seen in the sky or on land, whose appearance, trajectory, actions, motions, lights, and colors. They do not have a logical, conventional, or natural explanation. UFOs cannot be explained, not only by the original witness, but by scientists or technical experts who try to make a common sense identification after examining the evidence. (“J. Allen”)
People normally believe that a UFO is a huge flying aircraft, normally in a cylinder shape that flies in mid-air at night at very fast speeds. In theory, a UFO can actually be any size, shape, or color. This is due to the fact that there have been no factual scientific explanations on what UFO’s actually are. According to The National UFO Reporting Center, there are over thousands of reports yearly on sightings of UFOs. (“National”) This does not mean that there are actual sightings of UFOs, but opinionated reports on what “could have been” UFOs. They could be UFOs, however there is no information on file that makes those opinions facts. Still, there will be believers and nonbelievers of UFOs until factual information appears in the future. One sighting, which will be explained later on in the paper, is a story about a UFO sighting that happened in the summer of 1947. In July of 1947, rancher William “Mac” Brazel reported to the local sheriff department that he may have found the remains of a UFO. George Wilcox, the sheriff that responded to the Brazel’s report, contacted Roswell Army Air Field. (“J. Allen”) While they were examining the crash, they collected wreckage and took it to what is now known as Fort Worth. When the investigation began, there were many rumors going around about what was found during the examination. Once rumors surfaced, the story continued to build from there. While many people thought they took remains of extraterrestrials and pieces of what they thought was a UFO, others believe that it was just aircraft being flown by the Roswell Army Airfield. Both opinions do create questions that have gone unexplained, however. If there was a UFO that night, how come the investigators never determined that with the evidence they discovered. Opposite of that, if the Army did crash an aircraft that night, why did they not report it? Both of these questions still remain to be seen, but the majority of people tend to believe it was a UFO. An interesting article written by Kal Korff was about a man named Major Jesse Marcel, who was in the military, yet lied about his education and career in the military. Korff states “Marcel claimed that he personally flew the UFO wreckage to Carswell AFB. He could not have done so, for he was never a pilot.” (Korff) This causes flaws in the military theory of what actually happened that night, because the falsification of information by a Major in the Army really taints the information being given. Additionally, the Air Force attempted to cover up the mystery with a weather balloon story. Korff states “the remnants of a weather balloon that were brought in as a cover story to hide the true nature of the Roswell incident.” (Korff) The military tends to be secretive with aircraft and inventions because they do not want to leak out information to the public. With the Air Force covering up the story, it could be taken in two ways by the people. Either the military knows what happened that night and did not want to admit to their miscues, or they wanted to give relief to the people who believed in the UFO, until they could figure out what actually happened. After interviewing Brad Joyal, a student at Valdosta State University, I asked him about the Roswell incident and what his opinion is on what really happened that night.
The interview included the possibility of the UFO sighting, if the military is covering it up, and if there is enough evidence to believe in this so-called “UFO sighting.” He replied with “No I do not believe that there is or ever was a UFO that was witnessed on that night. I think that the Army was testing new aircraft on their airfield and the witnesses who thought they saw them mistook it for a UFO.” (Joyal Brad) When I asked him why he thought it was an aircraft that was flown by the Army, he responded with “It only makes sense. The military is always working with new inventions and aircraft that civilians and most military personnel don’t even know about.” (Joyal Brad) He continued with “the incident did happen in 1947, but that was just prior to the creation of the United States Air Force. It seems to me like they were testing new aircraft that night.” (Joyal Brad) I asked him if there was ever a potential for a UFO that night and he concluded with, “I do not believe in UFOs. Until I see one or am witness to an alien invasion, I will never believe in them. There is no factual information on UFOs, only speculations. In my opinion, it falls under the same category as the Yeti, Bigfoot, and the Lockness
Monster.” In my opinion, I believe the military is not covering up the existence of UFOs. I believe the military messed up the night of the Roswell incident and wanted to cover up their miscue. I do not think the military would cover up something this big, especially for this long of a period. The military, in my opinion, is covering up a failed attempt at aircraft. All of the pieces of the puzzle are there. The crash happened at night, near the Roswell Army Airfield, in the summer, and in a place with a lot of land (not near a big piece of civilization.) If there actually was an alien invasion of a UFO, I do not see why the military would feel the need to cover that up. The only logical explanation for a cover up would be to ease the community and people so they are not scared about a potential alien invasion. Other than that, the military and government communicates well with the people, especially when we go to war. They let the country know what is going to happen, normally how many troops will be sent into a certain country, and why they are being sent there. I do not know why this would be any different. Due to the fact that there have been many questions asked about UFOs, alien invasions, and extraterrestrials, I feel the military would have settled the situation instead of allowing all of these rumors to continually surface. In conclusion, the sighting of a “UFO” near the Roswell Army Airfield is still yet to be determined. Many people feel that there was a UFO that night, but others would disagree with that. From the theories of Brazell and Marcel, many people could conclude in two ways. Brazell’s theory is that there was a UFO that night that crash landed in a farm. Brazell, “Under questioning…said the symbols were shiny purple and they were small. There were many separate figures.” (National UFO Reporting Center) This makes it seem that there was a UFO, because the United States military does not use aircraft with purple material. On the other hand, many people believe that there was either a weather balloon, rocket, missile, flying saucer, or other aircraft that was seen that night. This, in my opinion, is the most logical explanation. Due to the fact that the airfield is near the place where the “UFO” crashed, it is really easy to think that it was actually a military aircraft that crashed. The actual facts of that night on July 7, 1947, may never be known, but until then, the rumors will continue to surface.
