Anyone in good health is eligible to be a donor, regardless of age or citizenship. You can register online, but the easiest way to become a donor is by checking the organ donor box on your driver license application. There are 8 major organs that can be donated: heart, kidneys, pancreas, lungs, liver and intestines. Organ donors can also donate tissues, such as skin, heart valves, corneas, bones, blood vessels, cartilage and tendons . By deciding to be a donor, you are giving the gift of life and hope to thousands who are awaiting transplants. While I am in favor of organ donation, there are opponents concerned that organ donors in the hospital in critical condition may not receive the level of care they deserve if there are others in the hospital who are in desperate need of the organs. Others opposed to organ donation fear their bodies may be mistreated post-mortem during the organ harvests process, thus eliminating the opportunity of an open casket funeral. These decisions are emotionally charged, one family is celebrating new life while the other is mourning the loss of a loved one. These meetings are carefully considered and are mutually decided on by the two families. They are arranged by a transplant coordinator assigned to the case. Grandpa wanted his entire family to be present for this special meeting. The ladies name was Julie, mother of Todd, a 22 year old who was tragically killed in an auto accident. The only thing these two families had in common was Todd’s heart, now beating inside my grandpa’s chest. Julie had brought along a framed picture of Todd for all of us to see. When she saw my grandpa she gave him a big hug, and placed her head on his chest so she could be near her son’s heart. It was a touching moment and a very special day for our family. From this experience my family and I strongly support organ donation. Roughly 1 in every 3 US citizens is a registered organ
