end to the destruction of our planet that climate change is causing. Today I will show you how climate change is the biggest problem we’re facing, why it will affect us so much, and how we can fix the problem before it’s too late.
The effects that climate change will have on the world will remarkably change entire ecosystems, starting at the Poles. The North and South Poles are the two places where we can already see the most prominent effects that climate change is having. The Poles are the first places to experience the dramatic changes that climate change is having on the wildlife that inhabits the area. Starting in the north at the Arctic, polar bear populations are declining very rapidly. The water is warmer because of the carbon dioxide being absorbed into the ocean, melting the ice more quickly than ever before, making a shorter hunting season and a longer summer for these polar bears, according to Frozen Planet: On Thin Ice, directed by Sir David Attenborough. If we take a look further down south into the Antarctic, we can see the decline in the adelie penguin population and the rise in gentoo penguin population in the area. According to Antarctic Edge: 70° South, directed by Dena Seidel, the adelie penguins need a colder climate to survive, but the water is warming
to be comfortably habitable by the gentoo penguins. The gentoo penguins are coming further down south because it expands the boundaries of their feed grounds and this creates a food deficit for the adelie penguins because the gentoo penguins are now eating their food, so they have to travel even farther south to feed- and sure it sucks for these animals, but this couldn’t affect us right? What do polar bears and penguins have to do with our lives? Unfortunately, these problems are going to start moving farther inland and start affecting the rest of us. Climate change will impact the accessibility of natural resources and the severity of floods and storms. Sea levels are rising fast because the ice sheets at the poles are melting at an alarming rate. Since the global sea levels are rising, this will also worsen the effect of floods and storms. Storms, especially hurricanes, will damage even more than they have in the past because there is a higher amount of water coming in and destroying homes, schools, and everything in between. According to the Earth Observatory, a branch of NASA, storms thrive off of heat, and with the climate change and global warming that our earth is experiencing, these storms are receiving that heat abundantly. Resources that we depend on as a part of our daily routine, such as chocolate and coffee, will be more limited and expensive. According to Bill Nye Saves the World, a Netflix Original produced by Bill Nye, one of the world’s most renowned scientists of our day, “the regions where most cacao is grown are going to be too hot, making chocolate scarce”. Bill Nye Saves the World also states that coffee will be harder to obtain because of “higher temperatures, long droughts punctuated by intense rainfall, [and] more resilient pests and plant diseases”. It’s not only coffee and chocolate that are going “extinct”, though. The populations of fish and pandas are also declining at a rapid pace. According to studies done by the University of Georgia and Florida International University, fish give back nutrients to the ocean and are the main contributors to nutrient recycling, but we cannot do that without these fish. Life will also be difficult for all of the seafood lovers because fish will not only be harder to obtain, but more expensive to eat due to “warming waters, overfishing, and ocean acidification”, according to Bill Nye. Pandas are also falling down the path of extinction because climate change is detrimental to the panda’s number one source of food- bamboo. If climate change continues to worsen, we will continue to lose many things that we put such a high value on. The increased amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels directly correlates with the temperature rise in the atmosphere and in the ocean waters. The excessive burning of fossil fuels in our society releases an extremely high amount of carbon dioxide into the air. According to “Climate Change: Vital Signs of the of Planet”, published by NASA, the carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels sits in the atmosphere like a blanket storing all of the heat of the earth. A combination of higher global temperatures and warming ocean water will cause the Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets to melt. According to Frozen Planet: On Thin Ice, The Albedo Effect is one of the main perpetrators of the earth’s gradually warming. Before fossil fuels were burning like wildfires, the sun’s rays would reflect off of the ice of the Arctic and Antarctic. Now since there is open water in place of ice sheets, the dark sea water is absorbing the heat of the sun, and this is the Albedo Effect. This produces a domino effect where the water temperatures rise, causing the ice to melt, exposing more open ocean water to the sun’s rays. This is a huge problem for our environment and in order to fully understand what the problem is, we must identify the root of the problem to find a solution. To start, there are a few key components in finding a solution to fight against climate change. The first step into any problem is to raise awareness. No one will be able to help if they had no idea that they have been part of the problem. Now it’s not that no one has heard of climate change and global warming, but there are many climate change deniers who make it difficult, maybe even impossible, to get everybody on the same page. If everyone sat down and said, “Climate change is real and we need to fix it now,” we could have already taken the first big step into stopping, or at least controlling the effects of, climate change. However, some people are unsure of what they believe, or deny climate change as is, building barriers between us. The next big thing to do is to vote. According to an article published by The Washington Post on March 28, 2017, President Trump passed a bill reverting former President Obama’s “Clean Energy Act”. In this article, the author, Darryl Fears, a reporter from Washington D.C., says, “Trump signed an executive order rolling back a temporary ban on mining coal and a stream protection rule imposed by the Obama administration”. In Trump’s speech that he gives, he talks about “giving the power back to the people”, so the most important thing you can do is vote. The final thing you can do to fight climate change is to put your money toward an issue that really matters. By sponsoring a clean, renewable energy program, we will be able to take a huge step forward in the fight against climate change. The most important thing to do is to get 100% clean energy, and to get fossil fuels completely out of the picture. According to Mark Jacobson, a Stanford civil and environmental engineering professor and director of the Atmosphere and Energy program, we have the technology, but we are missing three key components to making this dream a reality. First, we need the financial support to move forward into this clean energy program and to make it a part of the global agenda. The other two issues are social and political barriers coming between the human race. Instead of falling apart, we must come together in a time of crisis to save the world. In conclusion, we need to find a way to tackle the problem we have created for ourselves. The earth is in a desperate situation where if we do not take action now, it will soon be too late. The Poles are already melting, slowly deteriorating. The glaciers and ice caps are breaking, falling piece by piece into the ocean. The world as we know it may never be the same if we don’t start to change our ways for the better. In his “Climate Action Plan”, former president Barack Obama said, “But America cannot resist this transition, we must lead it.” So let us lead the movement to fight climate change by creating a 100% renewable energy program to save the world.
