Specific Purpose: To persuade the audience that aggressive driving is dangerous and is a serious problem on the roads today.
Introduction
I. Attention Getter: Speeding past someone, verbal abuse, physical abuse, and inappropriate and dangerous driving maneuvers that could hurt you and other drivers. Many of us know when we see it, this is called aggressive driving and I’m going to inform you about the dangers and easy solutions to fix this growing problem on the roads.
II. Connection: every day you and I encounter these people on the roads. When you run into them they can be a great danger to you and themselves. According to U.S. News and World Report, the U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that two-thirds of fatalities are at least partially caused by aggressive driving. But why are these deaths so high when they could easily be prevented?
III. Body
I. Problem: The main cause of an aggressive driver is, a “dumb” driver to put it in simple terms
A. The number one cause of aggressive driving according to a story written by Amarillo Daily News is the “left lane hog”
B. It is the unaware / discourteous driver that infuriates the driver the most.
1. Reduced law enforcement of highways and roads, traffic and personal problems also play a role is the disposition …show more content…
of the aggressive driver.
C. The act of aggressive driving in most cases makes the driver feel satisfied and justified in their actions, but in most cases this behavior will often result in damage to themselves and others
I. The dangers/ consequences: as I had mentioned earlier more than two thirds of the 42,000 highway deaths were in some way linked to aggressive driving.
1.
A story in people magazine talked about the three types of drivers on the road the first being the insane (people who drive faster than everyone), the moronic (those that drive slower than everyone) and then there is you. Also in this article they said 3/4 of people will not admit to being a “road warrior” and the problem with that is if you don’t accept that you are one you won’t try to fix it most people think of it as “if its not broken why fix it” so for change to really come people need to realize they might just be one of these aggressive drivers and if they don’t change they might be in that U.S. News and world report I quoted earlier as one of the 42,000
deaths.
2. When I was researching information for this speech “road rage” seemed to be the most popular term used to describe aggressive driving behaviors.
1. But in definition road rage in most cases is much more than just aggressive driving sometimes it even goes to the extreme, there have been cases of people getting shot and killed because a person was so angry. Incidents like these have been on the rise.
Alright so now that we know the dangers of aggressive driving what can we do not become a victim of aggressive driving and overall not become an aggressive driver our self’s.
IV. There are really multiple solutions for both the victim and for the perpetrators.
1. What can you do to not become a “road warrior”? You might ask first you have to understand you cannot control traffic! And before you overreact to another drivers mistakes stop and ask yourself how many times you make that same mistake when you drive. And before you make a mistake you might ultimately regret and feel stupid for ask you self is it worth dyeing over or hurting someone.
2. Now that you know how to not become an aggressive driver I’m going to tell you how to not become a victim. According to a story in the Journal Star newspaper of Peoria, here are some tips on what you can do on the road to not become a victim. First don’t block the passing lane, second make sure you don’t tailgate even if it’s not purposefully in other words keep a safe distance between you and other cars. This one is in my opinion the most dangerous and the most annoying, use your turning signals when you have intentions of changing lanes and please when you do it don’t cut people off.
Conclusion:
When you look at the amount of deaths each year associated with aggressive driving you start to see a pattern it’s on the rise. And if you smart you’ll take what I told you in this speech and not fall a victim to this problem. So next time someone cuts you off on the highway just stay calm and ask your self is it worth it?
