Peru was conquered by Spain led by Francisco Pizarro, in 1532. Before this took place, Peru was a part of the Inca Empire whose heart was located in Cusco. The Spaniards executed Atahualpa, which was the reigning Inca monarch, and the established military of that time. Manco Inca Capac was then installed in replace, who was in fact the nephew of the former monarch, Atahualpa. The indigenous people of Peru soon realized that he was an extension of the Spaniards acting as their puppet. This method was used by the Spaniards to give the indigenous people the feeling that they have a monarch of their own people and that they can trust in him as they did their former monarch. The Spanish rulers wanted uniformity and to achieve this they wanted new and distinctive Latin American cultures. They did not want them to be Spanish or Portuguese, and not indigenous or African. Instead they wanted a fusion of multiple elements. Transculturation can be imagined as many confrontations and tacit negotiations taking place in everyday life, but restricted to remaining under the reigns of the hierarchy.
