Pet rats are one of the most misunderstood animals that people keep as pets. When I tell someone that I have pet rats they say things like: ”Ew! thats gross” and “rats carry disease”. However, rats are one of the oldest types of domesticated animals and is also the friendliest.
Rats are very social animals, people who have rats usually keep two or more together. Rats like play fighting with one another and will sometimes make friends with other animals like guinea pigs. Which is exactly what my rat Remy did. Before he was living with other rats he made friends with my guinea pigs, and they would play with each other. Rats that are kept alone can often become depressed and won't live as long as rats that have other rats as company.
Rats can be trained to do lots of different kinds of tricks like how to play fetch and sit on your shoulder while you walk around. And they can sometimes be trained to come when their called. They can also be easily littler trained just like cats. My rats know how to do all of these things, but the only times they will come to me or fetch something is when they know that they will get a treat.
A lot of people think that rats will bite, but they don't. Rats that bite were most likely not taken care of properly and not handled very often when they were babies. Or they were somehow mistreated. A well-loved, well taken care of rat never bites and are very friendly.
Rats need to be let out and played with everyday. They are very curious and love to run around, explore and see the world that is around them.
