Peter Pan Stereotypes
This might be a general stereotype, homosexual males being viewed as mentally ill but on the other hand, have a vast imagination and are very fashionable. However, this stereotype isn’t accurate. Having actual gay friends, they should not be viewed as mentally ill, as they have a cheerful and energetic personality. This chapter will examine the villains from five full-length animations; Peter Pan (1953), Robin Hood (1973), The Little Mermaid (1989), Aladdin (1992), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) and Hercules (1997), and see how the stereotypes are applied and being created through their commonness. The antagonist Captain Hook in Peter Pan is one of the most vicious and cunning villains. His only desire is to have revenge on Peter Pan.
As a song called “The Elegant Captain Hook” in the film indicates, he is apparently very nicely dressed and somewhat classy. He is very thin with a sharp long upward mustache and a very large chin. His puffy black hair drapes over his shoulders, and his nose is curved like a big hook accompanied by arched eyebrows. Not only that, he wears a frilly white cravat and a pink sweater or a shirt underneath a bright red crimson coat with gold lining. He dons violet colored pants and knee high socks with black boots. He swings around his hands in the air to express himself, and lifts his pinky while drinking wine or whenever he holds or picks up something. He is often seen clinging to his sidekick, Mr. Smee, when chased by a crocodile he is terribly terrified of. Captain Hook is not as queer as Scar from The Lion King, but at the same time, he does have the femininity in the way he dresses and expresses himself. Peter Pan, the protagonist on the other hand, only wears a simple green outfit with a green hat, resembling an elf.
