Philips and Baby Bottles
The product we have decided to create and sell is a baby bottle which has a bottom that unscrews. The purpose of this product is to make it easier for parents to wash baby bottles, which are often difficult to clean. Things like formula and milk may stick on the bottom and may take minutes of soaking to clean out. Even the dishwasher may not clean out the bottle good enough to use again. Often times the gunk does not get cleaned off. With a removable bottom, there is a guarantee that the bottle will be clean by the next use, which promotes hygiene. Another good part of this baby bottle is that is reusable and can last longer than a common bottle. Our main idea for this product is the hygienic and cleanliness aspects, which makes this product a great bottle to be manufactured and sold by the AVENT baby bottle company, which is run by Philips. This is the parent company we have chosen to function under because of their prominence for health and well-being, which is something our product, prides itself on. We want to ensure the safety of each child using the bottle. Another reason for choosing Philips AVENT as a parent company is their focus on innovation, and our product is something that has yet to be introduced into the market of baby products. The name of our product is called BottomsUp.
The sector of Philips our product will fall under is the Consumer Lifestyle sector, which includes Norelco, AVENT, and Sonicare. During the year 2011, this sector sold €5.83 million, $7.55 million, in sales. The company as a whole made $5.12 billion in sales by the end of 2011.
The market for baby bottles, which is an important sector of the infant/newborn product industry, is an industry that is dominated at the top by companies such as Philips AVENT, which provides a wide array of products for infants and newborn babies. As their website indicates, “Philips AVENT is a leader in parenting and baby products. The Philips AVENT products range includes breastfeeding, bottle

Prolonged baby bottle use (beyond 12 months of age) is a common feeding practice that is often accompanied by recumbent feeding at nap or night-time sleep. Kaste and Gift (1995) reported that 19.9% of U.S. children at age 2 years use a baby bottle at bedtime with contents other than water. In their review of the 1991 National Health Interview data set, they found that 9.3% of 3 year olds continued to use a bottle. Further, prolonged bottle use was most often associated with Hispanic ethnicity, poverty, urban residence, and low parental education levels. A more recent community based study found that 40% of 2 year olds continued to use a bottle as did 16% of 3 year olds and 8% of 4 year olds. In this smaller study (N = 191), the significant contributing factor for late bottle weaning was mothers' return to work. Their findings were derived from a sample of children with middle class, well-educated parents (Hammer, Bryson, & Agras, 1999).…

The duties of motherhood vary by culture, family, and the needs of each individual child. However, most agree that mothers have some of the most fundamental jobs of humanity. They are to provide safety and nourishment for their children. This entails making seemingly important decisions to be sure their child is safe and well cared for. Choosing whether to breastfeed or formula feed is one of the first decisions a woman will make regarding her baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) joins other organizations such as the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Dietetic Association (ADA), and the World Health Organization (WHO) in recommending breastfeeding as the best source of nourishment for babies because it helps defend against infections, prevents allergies, and protect against a number of chronic conditions. This leads us to question why the U.S. has one of the lowest rates of breastfeeding among industrialized countries and one of the highest rates of infant mortality in the world. Perhaps we can attribute these stigmas to the fact that companies such as Nestle, Mead Johnson Nutrition Company, and Abbott Laboratories have implemented a plethora of aggressive marketing strategies to appeal to new mothers in order to sell their products. These companies dwell on the overall shift from nature to science to promote their products despite…
