Phillip Caputo: The Vietnam War
The Vietnam war was one of the most controversial wars that the USA was in, citizens of the USA were outraged about the Vietnam war as the America sent 540,000 troops over to Vietnam killing many Vietnamease children and elderly. The Vietnam War started in 1954 and ended in 1973 which is the setting of the book. The war is completely relevant to the book as that is all the book is about. Phillip Caputo was in the Marine Corps to prove something to his parents. He wanted to do something that his family would most likely go against. Phillip Caputo was in the war, he was on the battlefield and he was on the frontlines during the war. The book depicts the terrible things that went on such as the many deaths he had to witness when his job …show more content…
There were many conflicts in the story that Caputo had to deal with, one being his ethics. After seeing what napalm or other types of attacks do he became disattached from reality to the point that all he wanted was to die. “I saw their living mouths moving in conversation and their dead mouths grinning the taut-drawn grins of corpses. Their living eyes I saw, and their dead eyes still-staring. Had it not been for the fear that I was going crazy, I would have found it an interesting experience, a trip such as no drug could possibly produce. Asleep and dreaming, I saw dead men living; awake, I saw living men dead.” This is an example of the things he saw out in Vietnam, this is what caused his pain and suffering. This was one of the biggest internal conflicts of the story saying that he had to go through that everyday which caused him lots of pain. “Ethics seemed to be a matter of distance and technology. You could never go wrong if you killed people at long range with sophisticated weapons.” This is just another example of the conflict of ethics. Ethics is one of the main things that Caputo had to deal with throughout the war, it is also one of the main issues citizens of the USA had with the

This is a Jap uniform!’ and then he rolled the body over with his boot and said, ‘ look , Tayo, look at the face,’ and that was when Tayo started screaming because it wasn’t a Jap, it was Josiah, eyes shrinking back into the skull and all their shrinking black light glazed over by death” (Silko 7).…

Operation Ranch Hand; 1961-1972; The heart of the Vietnam War, and the U.S. needs an advantage. “[The military] sprayed more than 19 million gallons of herbicides over 4.5 million acres of land in Vietnam...Agent Orange, which contained the chemical dioxin, was the most commonly used of the herbicide mixtures, and the most effective,” (“Agent”). In total, this agent accounted for 11-13 million gallons of the total herbicides released. Agent Orange was later found to be the origin of various health problems; these include tumors, birth defects, skin irritation, psychological changes, and cancer. The herbicides main purpose was to clear the vegetation, allowing the front line to detect approaching enemies in time for defensive action; the…

When America left Vietnam that South Vietnamese people were most likely feeling intimidated, scared, but at the same time relieved. In the “Doc-Lap at Last” section of the article, it states “ On April 30, 1975, columns of North Vietnamese soldiers entered Saigon, meeting little resistance for the demoralized South Vietnamese army.” The phrase, “columns of soldiers,”…

I think that the first section of the book is very well written, and you really do get the sense that the author knew what was happening on the wide-scale. In some books, the author can only focus on 1 small element, whereas the introduction to this gives a broad sweeping overview of so many different things - many of which made it into the movie; the new Air-Cavalry concept, the emphasis placed on small-unit and larger-unit training exercises, the command structure being shifted to allow for the loss of leaders, the President's idea not to declare a state of emergency, and then the background of the conflict in Vietnam, including troop movements by the North Vietnamese forces, the tactics they used, and a look at their equipment.…

This novel is very different from the others that I have read. Tim O’Brien wrote this book to show how it was at Vietnam and what soldiers have to go thru. However he wrote this book under the genre of fiction because this way he could write things that were not true and still make it billable to the reader. Rather than him just saying things as they are. Perhaps if he told things as they really happen then the reader might not be interested of what was going on. Now the author wrote this book for two reasons.…

The United States strategy in Vietnam from 1965 to 1968 went through various changes and revisions as leadership tried to find a feasible plan of action. US Army General William Westmoreland and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara were two of the major forces in US leadership that would shape the war effort. They devised a military strategy of attrition through tactics of search and destroy, covert operations, and other factors in hopes of wearing out the enemy. While their strategy found some success on the battlefields, the ineffectiveness of search and destroy missions, the over emphasis on body counts, and the disconnect between everyday soldiers and their superiors about defining success would doom the US war effort.…

But Lieutenant Caputo didn’t really understand the concept till after their first encounter with the enemy. Caputo now had a new perceptive on his men. Sergeant Loker gave insight about Hanson, a rifleman in the 1st platoon by informing him of the nature of war, “I caught the little sonuvabitch cutting the ears off one of those dead VC. He had a K-bar and was trying to slice ears off” (Caputo, 125). Caputo later realizes the truth that he really doesn’t know these men, “I now realized that some of them were not so decent and good. Many had petty jealousies, hatreds, and prejudices. Sergeant Colby tried to help Caputo understand why such incidents happen. He said, “When I was in Korea, I saw men sight their rifles in by shooting at Korean farmers. Before you leave here, sir, you’re going to learn that one of the most brutal things in the world is your average nineteen-year-old American boy” (Caputo, 137). Even though the Lieutenant refused to accept the fact that the men he had shared everything with were capable of these actions it still stuck with…

A Rumor of War is divided into three sections. The first part Caputo named “The Splendid Little War” and in this part he explains why he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, describes his training, and tells about his arrival in Vietnam. In the U.S. Marine Corps, Lieutenant Philip Caputo was a part of the ninth Expeditionary Brigade, which was the first group of troops sent into the Vietnam War. His brigade was deployed to Da Nang and they were supposed to set the perimeter for an airstrip that would ensure the arrival and departure of military troops and goods. Caputo and the ninth Expeditionary Brigade had clashed with the North Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong, leading to combat that proved that this war was going to be one they could not lose and would have to fight hard for a victory. The second section of the book is called “The Officer in Charge of the Dead.” In this part, Caputo tells about when he was reassigned from engaging in combat with his brigade to sitting at a desk documenting casualties. He was not happy with his enrollment into the Joint Staff of the brigade because he preferred to be out in the battlefield engaging in combat rather than sitting inside at a desk.…

Historians use many methods that I was able to use in this investigation. For example, they examine both primary and secondary sources. I found information from both primary and secondary sources. I looked at what Ho Chi Minh had said and what historians said. My primary sources were a declaration of independence by Ho Chi Minh and a letter to American President Johnson. In those sources, Ho Chi Minh explained why the Vietnamese were fighting and that they wanted to be free and independent. My secondary sources were historians describing what happened in the Vietnam War after it happened.…

Background: The Vietnam War, also consider by many the Second Indochina War, was a war that lasted approximately twenty-one years. Although the Vietnam War had several events that led to the chaos, one of the main causes of the war involved the spread of communism. It was believed by many that communism could spread and the citizens of Vietnam at the time were having conflict with the French colonial, this lead up to the war. This idea was known as the “Domino Theory”. President Eisenhower threatened by the spread of communist decided to send aid to South Vietnam in 1955. The battle ran from April of 1954, until April of 1975.…

On the one hand Americans viewed this novel as an Anti-American piece that offered an erroneous picture of US policy towards Vietnam. This is the perspective of Davies who believes that Greene in his book is offering a wrong description of American ideals in international affairs. On the other hand, the novel was viewed, as a warning for what US policy towards Vietnam would bring and how it would impact Vietnamese people. This view is embraced by Allen who sees the novel as statement of what a lot people think of American policies in the international arena. In fact the novel place a love story during war times that illustrates the complicated relationship that Vietnam, France, Great Britain and the US had at that time.…

I had a difficult time with the characters and the setting of the story. This might have been on purpose on Bobbie Ann Mason’s part, to connect in a very close and emotional way. This novel would really connect with people who lived through the Vietnam war and the 1980’s. All of her references to time and regional aspects of setting, such as K-Marts, McDonald’s and the song titles stop Sam and the reader from connecting onto a different level. Sam and Emmett did not eat right or do what was right for their bodies. They ate from McDonalds, they ate TV dinners, they drank soda and beer, and they also smoked cigarettes. Sam’s father was dead because of the war which is the whole point of the book on how she is trying to find out what her father was really like and who he was as a person. Irene who is Sam’s mother use to tell her stories about the war, but then it upset her so her mom stopped. “It upset her to be reminded of the war, but the reality of it didn’t register on Sam until one day soon after they got their first color TV set” (Pg. 51). Vietnam became a real place to Sam at that point. Sam’s Pap also told her stories “He was a good boy,” “He never took a drink, didn’t smoke” (Pg. 196) Sam’s Uncle Emmett is in charge since she no longer has her dad and her mom lives in Kentucky with her new husband and Sam is reluctant to go because she wants to stay and watch over her Uncle Emmett. Sam is always trying to get him to tell her what the war was like but he cannot describe it. So instead they sit at home watching Mash the television show learning about war in general and Sam also reads books to gather up more information in her spear time. Sam is afraid to leave Emmett because she is feeling like he is connected to her father and the Vietnam War, and if she ever aspects to learn more about her father, Sam thinks Emmett could be the one to help. Sam’s mother Irene offered for her to come live with her and her new husband but…
