A philosophy of nursing is a description of what nursing means to the individual or organization. The philosophy is how a nurse is seen and serves as a standard for nursing. It is a set of values in which one follows through a career. Each nurse has their own set of values, or philosophy that he or she goes by throughout their career. The purpose of this paper is to develop my own philosophy of nursing by understanding other philosophies.

Good Samaritan Hospital’s (GSH) philosophy is derived from their mission, vision, and values statement. GSH’s mission is to provide quality care to Knox county and surrounding areas. Their vision states that they are a recognized as a leader in healthcare in the surrounding counties in providing quality health care. GSH uses the acronym PRIDE to describe their values; P standing for patient needs being of the highest priority, R standing for respect for patients and families as well as coworkers, I standing for integrity which insures the patient that the staff is trustworthy, D stands for dignity for the privacy that each patient will be given to respect their personal privacy, and E stands for excellence that the patient care exceeds the expectations (Good Samaritan Hospital, 2008). The philosophy of GSH is important to me as a professional nurse because it reflects on the patient’s needs and how the nurse should act to carry out those needs. If the nurse follows the acronym PRIDE, then he or she will be the best nurse that they can be to GSH’s
