Women’s participation in sports has changed over the centuries. In ancient times, men dominated societies. Women were viewed as the caretaker, a provider for life. Women who did participate were criticized and were thought of as threatening. In 18th century America, women were considered inferior to men because of the belief that women are the weaker sex. A woman’s purpose in life was to take care of the house, children, and husband. When they did want to participate in recreational sport, they need to be able to negotiate with men and with other women because societies did not make it easy for women to participate. For example, there was a woman who wanted to go sailing, but to do so she needed to deal with the owner of the boat, her husband and a neighboring couple, who was to accompany her, to do so. Most of us remember gym class. For many of us, it was the most hated or the most anticipated class. Those that were a little bit heavier or not as athletically inclined may remember the class as a nightmare, while others may remember it as the most exciting time of the day. Either way, physical education was required. Today, however, the necessity of physical education classes is up for debate. Parents, faculty, council members, and even the government are weighing the pros and cons of allowing physical education in school. I believe that even though the funding being used to pay for equipment and gymnasiums could be better spent on books and materials for other classes, physical education should stay in school because it provides healthy exercise for children and teens. Physical educational professionals should be demonstrating and a model of what they teach. Physical educators should value wellness and fitness and continue to do so throughout their respected careers. One professor suggests that the lack of skill and in depth activity content knowledge is a major problem in (PETE) programs and for the future of the physical education profession. There are two major factors that can be credited to this dilemma. The first factor is being an increase emphasis in major curriculums on classroom oriented theory and models at the expense of quality activity and the second factor is the lack of both tactile expertise and skills in many teachers. There is a wide variety of areas that physical educators should have knowledge of which includes the fundamental motor skills, individual and dual activities, team sports, aquatics, gymnastics, and educational dance. These skills are an essential part of the preparation of a physical educator.
