Project IV: Personal Philosophy Of Physical Education
Project IV: Personal Philosophy of Physical Education

Physical Education is important because it teaches people how to stay physically fit and live a healthy lifestyle. I believe that physical education is a necessary thing to be taught in both a school and home setting. With the advancement of technology, it seems that people are getting lazier and more overweight. This is obviously an issue in the United States. Therefore, I believe it is important for every individual to be taught physical education and to stay physical fit throughout the course of life. The first emphasis on physical education should be in a family setting. It is necessary that family members or parents emphasize the importance and benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Physical activity should be encouraged at an early age. It would be best to make physical education a required school curriculum. A student taking a physical education class will have many benefits. For example, a child taking a physical education class will learn about proper exercising. It would also be wise if the instructors integrated information about healthy eating habits into the curriculum to further increase a child 's knowledge on good dieting. However, the subject of physical education is not prioritized by most educators. According to recent research and evaluation done by educators and their perceptions of physical education teachers, “PE remains a marginalized subject with low priority” (Norris, Mars, et al., 2017). If there is not a prioritized and formal education in an area we are exposed to on a daily basis, it is difficult to construct the relation between perception and behavior for most individuals. To clarify, if physical education instructors are not teaching students the importance of physical activity, when those students become adults they are highly likely to suffer from health issues due to their lack of inactivity. According to a health data collection institute, “Today, 2.1 billion people – nearly 30% of the world’s population – are either obese or overweight” (Murray and Ng). These statistics are concrete details in showing the world’s perception of physical activity and how inactivity has resulted in high obesity…

Research has been done on self-determination theory (SDT) that shows self-determined motivation is directly linked to adaptive motivational behaviors. This research showed much promise, but was not well translated or integrated to make physical education (PE) more effective in further learning. Bo Shen, Nate McCaughtry, Jeffrey Martin, and Mariane Fahlman researched the effects of teacher autonomy supporting autonomous motivation on learning through physical education self-determination theory.
