I plan to be a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) when I finish college. The Physical Therapist Assistant program is a two year program. I am positive that this is what I want to be. I can finish school at any time after I become a Physical Therapist Assistant, and become a full on Physical Therapist, if I would ever want to. I will be transferring to Wytheville Community College next year, because Bluefield College doesn’t have the Physical Therapist Assistant program. I am going to Bluefield College my first year to get my general classes done, because my mom works as a secretary there and I get free tuition.…
The physical demand of this career is to take care of the people and the mental demands are that you must know what to do with all injuries you come into contact to. To become certified you must be licensed by the state you are going to work in and become a graduate from a degree program that's been accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association. There are also legal restrictions when it comes to becoming a physical therapist like having some sort of criminal record. If you have any kind of criminal record it will be very difficult to become a certified sports physical…
I have chosen the career path to be a Physical Therapist. A Physical Therapist’s job is very detailed and extremely important to the patient’s well-being. Some of their duties include examining patients as they come in to physical therapy, gathering a plan that is going to get them back on their feet, helping them regain strength, ease their pain, and preventing their disabilities from progressing. Two pros of this career, for me, would be examining patient’s data in order to come up with a plan to meet their needs and being able to give medical information to a patient or their family members. Examining a patient is a pro because it’s solely how the patient is going to get treatment. It’s essential to the process because you can’t help the…

When I was a little girl, my parents would always ask the question little kids love to answer, "What are you going to be when you grow up?" Of course, like most children that age, I would answer with "a singer" or "a policeman". It wasn’t until later, when I was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, that I had a change of heart. Every single day I was faced with pain that would cause my joints to lock up, and swell. I was unable to walk or bend my elbows for days at a time. I was being forced to do the opposite of what I loved doing, which was playing softball. The doctors told me it would be best if I searched for new hobbies. Because of my arthritis, my knees turned inward, making my running and jumping sort of awkward. I did not want to quit playing the sport I loved, so we begged for more options. For me, quitting softball was not one of them. The doctors recommended physical therapy. I agreed, and on the day I started my first session, I introduced to the profession I would dream of pursuing for the rest of my life. The therapist looked like they were having a blast doing what they were getting paid to do. It was so inspiring.…

I was a junior in high school during basketball season with no plans for college. It was the fourth game of the season with eight seconds to go in the fourth quarter, when I cut down the middle to go up for a shot and ended up on the ground from a player striking the side of my knee. After three trainers and two doctors looked at my knee I got news back that it was an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear, meaning surgery and that I was done with sports until my senior year. After surgery, I had a weekend of rest then started physical therapy. I attended physical therapy three times a week for two hours as well as doing at home exercises. I enjoyed seeing all that a therapist does and how they help people get back to where they were before. I was incredibly grateful for all they did for me getting me ready in time for summer volleyball for my senior year. I started to research all about a Physical Therapist and came across Physical Therapy Assistant, which I found more interesting mainly because it was less schooling. I had decided this is what I wanted to do and go to college for. Once senior year started, I did an internship with the facility I had gone to for therapy. I loved the environment and how the workers all communicated and got along. Getting to help people every day get their range of motion back and watching all the progress they make over the weeks was inspiring and that is what I wanted to see every day in my…
Occupational scientists study the “phenomenological aspects of occupation through qualitative research”. Occupational scientists focus on human occupation and study humans as occupational beings. This means that there is not one direct way to study occupations but rather many ways in studying occupations. This involves studying the different aspects of occupations by asking individuals about their experiences when accomplishing tasks. These different aspects include the subjective individual experiences, meanings behind participating in occupations, and bodily experiences when engaging in occupations. It is important to study these qualitative aspects along with the study of observable quantitative aspects because they go hand-in-hand with…
My sophomore year while playing in a football game, I tackled a player from the other team right before half-time. While I was making the tackle, I felt a pop in my knee. It wasn’t very painful because of the adrenaline in my system at the time but the next day the pain came. It felt like there was a rubber band getting caught on my knee and coming off almost every step I took. I just put this pain aside through part of basketball season until the pain was too much and I went to get a check up, then a MRI, then before i knew it I had to get surgery for a torn meniscus. This ended my basketball season. After surgery I went to my rehab physical therapist Dr. Marty in Centralia. He got my knee back in good working order after…
During my adolescent years, I became interested in the medical field. Many of my family members are also in the medical profession as well. I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field because it is the social norm in my family. However, I started to develop an interest in Occupational therapy when I entered college. My grandfather suffered a severe stroke and was admitted to Parker Jewish Medical Center, a local rehabilitation center. Several times when I visited, he was receiving services by an Occupation therapist. I was able to see my grandfather’s progress because of his Occupational therapist. His Occupational therapist was able to ultimately regain my grandfather’s independence. Occupational therapy impacted my grandfather’s life and also inspired me to pursue Occupational therapy as a profession. Throughout my undergraduate education, I…
The ability to walk and move freely is something I think many people take for granted. Most people do not have to think about when to take a step or how to turn their head, they just do it; yet some people are never blessed with this ability, and still many others may lose this in a mere matter of seconds. However, this is why I am so happy to live in the world that we live in; a world where scientists, researchers, and doctors refuse to accept that a diagnosis is final. Restoring movement to a patient who has lost it can enable them to more fully enjoy all that life has to offer. The role of physical therapists is integral in assuring patients that there is a reason to hope. The process of rehabilitation is very slow and sometimes painful,…

I always knew I wanted to have a career in helping individuals, I just never knew what it was. I grew up around a hospital because my mom is a doctor and I would always interact with her patients and got to hear how my mom helped their lives so positively. It was eye-opening to know that just one person could have such a direct impact on so many lives. With that in mind, I decided to start doing research on different healthcare fields. After a couple weeks, I came across occupational therapy. I do not know how to describe the feeling, but I was instantly drawn in to this career, and as I researched, the more intrigued I became. I loved the idea of being able to interact with patients and help aid in their recovery. All the patient stories I read talked about how occupational therapy changed their life and how they have such a positive view of therapy afterwards. I believe this is the right career path for me, because it is going to allow me to positively restore people’s lives. If I can directly help someone heal to the best of their ability after a life-altering situation or complication, I would get such an immense amount of satisfaction. I am a very unselfish person and always find it more rewarding to brighten someone else’s day. With occupational therapy, I hope to…
