HAPPY PHYSICAL THERAPY DAY!
Thank you for spending time to read my article and giving some insights and citing another journal that can be useful to further elaborate the discussion. It is up lifting that you are finding ways to flourish yourself as a professional.
Crist, McVay, & Marocco (2014), noted that last 2000, HOD already passed Vision 2020 that contains direct access information to be implemented by physical therapists in both federal and state level (p.6). Although up until now, not all states practice direct access (APTA, n.d), it is right to say that APTA has a plan to escalate direct access in the whole country in the future. Reading from the journal you cited, even though it is based in Australia, we can relate it as to what may happen if we are not fully educated about our roles once direct access will be fully implemented here in USA. Crane & Delany (2013), elaborated how Australia’s definition of scope of practice, advance practice and extended scope of practice differentiation and how it affects effectiveness of physical therapist in emergency department setting, advising that PTs should be further equip themselves not only with core …show more content…
values, clinical judgment, and comprehensive knowledge but also needs to have expertise in diagnostic modalities, pharmacology, and some invasive procedures in order to define efficient and cost effective practice. Australia and United Kingdom has been practicing direct access with some limitations in different settings (WCPT, 2016), however, as noted above there is still need for educational upgrade or continued learning (Crane & Delaney, 2013) to maximize benefits not only for patients, but for the whole country as well.
With that in mind, we can conclude that even in countries that has direct access and PTs are free to practice their profession autonomously, it is still essential for our profession to continue learning in order for the medical field to further recognize us an individual entity and confident enough to properly diagnose and treat patient within our expertise.
Physical therapists here in US, as I can see, will face a lot of struggles before becoming a nation that has direct access, since until this day, there are still six states that has limitation for direct access (APTA, n.d) despite the fact that the professionals in these states, as I believe, knows how to practice autonomously.
Let us just not stop to chase opportunity to learn, so that once that change will be implemented, we will be
ready.
Thank you.
