Verifying Newton”s Second Law of Motion !

Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to verify Newton’s second law of motion by determining the proportionality between acceleration and mass, and between acceleration and net force.!

Materials: Dynamics cart, dynamics track, photogate, pulley, Lab Pro, Logger Pro ® ,
Graphical Analysis ®, String, four 200g masses.!
!
Procedure: !
Part A:!
1. The equipment was set up like the apparatus is shown.!
2. The photo gate was connected to Lab Pro and then Logger Pro was run. The “Open” button was clicked on the menu→ the “Probes and Sensors” button was opened→ the
“Pulley.cmbl” file was opened. The velocity-time graph was maximized.!
3. The net force that was responsible for accelerating the system was recorded. This remained constant.!
4. The “collect” button was hit once the setup was ready. The cart was released but caught before it stroke the pulley and photogate. The “stop” button was pressed.!
5.The graph made by Logger Pro was examined.The selection that showed constant acceleration and linear fit was zoomed in on. The slope of the line was recorded.!
6.Steps 4 and 5 were repeated three more times , while a 200g mass was added to the top of the cart each time. The accelerations were recorded in the table of values on the left.! Part B:!
7. The equipment was set up as before, but three 200g masses were placed on the cart.
The mass of the system was recorded. !
8. When the set up was ready, the “collect” button was hit. The cart was released but caught before it hit the pulley and photo gate. The “stop” button was pressed.!
9. The graph made by Logger Pro was examined. The selection that showed constant acceleration and fit was zoomed in with a linear fit.!

The experiment was conducted using a glider (a low-friction cart) rolling on a smooth, flat, level track. One end of a string was attached to the front of the glider. From the glider the string passed over a pulley mounted at the end of the track, and then downward to a weight hanger hooked to its lower end. Because of the very low friction of the glider's wheels and of the pulley, any weight hung on the string resulted in a horizontal force pulling the glider along the track.
