Picking Cotton
What would a world without forgiveness be?
Close your eyes and dream of losing everything, everything that ever meant anything to you at all. Your entire life, everything that you know, is being snatched right from under your feet. However, there’s not a thing you can do about it but sit back and hope for the best. You’re left in this bloodcurdling world with nothing but what you have in your soul and spirit. That’s an extremely daunting feeling. Dreaming of that is a crazy thing to ask, because that is without a doubt a complete nightmare. A nightmare is exactly what Mr. Ronald Cotton went through for eleven years of his life. Mr. Cotton was wrongly accused of raping two women and had eleven years of his life snatched away from him. There was absolutely nothing Cotton could have done about the situation but dangle from the hands of God in hopes he would pull him up again. Nevertheless, Cotton never gave up faith that God would guide him through this battle and he would make it out and still be able to hold his head high. True enough, God pulled Mr. Cotton through the struggle and he was able to walk a free man once again. If you spent eleven years of your life in prison because someone accused you of something you had absolutely nothing to do with, would you forgive him or her? Should you even think about forgiving them? Someway, somehow Cotton forgave Thompson for her mistake. Everyone makes mistakes, right?
Now, close your eyes and dream of losing everything, everything that ever meant anything to you at all. Your entire life, everything that you know, is being snatched right from under your feet. However, you have the opportunity to have a little justice. Some disgusting, heartless individual has taken your happiness and left you in this bloodcurdling world with nothing but fear and confusion. That’s an extremely daunting feeling. Dreaming of that is a crazy thing to ask, because that is without a doubt a complete nightmare. A nightmare is exactly what Mrs.

The cultural event that I attended was the lecture with the Picking Cotton authors Jennifer Thompson and Ronald Cotton. The event was located in Memorial Coliseum where Jennifer Thompson and Ronald Cotton talked about there story. I chose to attend this activity not only for my cultural event, but also because I thought it would be interesting and helpful. I actually enjoyed reading the book and I wanted to hear more about their story and experiences. I was really interested in seeing what they looked like and being able to put a face to the characters of the book. I’m really glad I went to this event because it was great to hear what they had to say and the advice they gave everyone. I think it had a large impact on not only…

According to the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of forgive is to stop feeling angry or resentful toward someone for an offense, flaw, or mistake. However, there is a deeper meaning to this. Contrary to some of Harold S. Kushner’s statements, I believe that forgiveness is as beneficial for the victim of the crimes as it is for the offender. In fact, I am far more inclined to agree with Jose Hobday’s views. He states that…

Oh, my God! That worries me so. Suppose I think I’m in love with a man and I marry him and it turns out I’m not in love with him. What does being in love mean? I wish I didn’t think so much. I wish to heaven I didn’t. Everything bad that happens to a girl I begin to worry it will happen to me. All night I’ve been worrying. Part of the time I’ve been worrying that I’d end an old maid like Aunt Sarah, and part of the time I worry that I’ll fall in love with someone like Syd and defy Papa and run off with him and then realize I made a mistake and part of the time I worry… that what happened to Sibyl Thomas will happen to me and.. .(A pause) Could what happened to Sibyl Thomas ever happen to you? I don’t mean the dying part. I know we all have to die. I mean the other part - having a baby before she was married. How do you think it happened to her? Do you think he loved her? Do you think it was the only time she did? You know… (A pause.) Old, common, Anna Landry said in the girls’ room at school, she did it whenever she wanted to, with whomever she wanted to and nothing ever happened to her. And if it did she would get rid of it. How do women do that? I don’t trust Anna Landry and I don’t know who else to ask. Can you imagine the expression on Mama’s face, or Aunt Lucy’s or Mrs. Cookenboo’s if I asked them something like that? (A pause.) Anyway, even if I knew I would be afraid to do something like that before I got married for fear God would strike me dead. (A pause.) Aunt Sarah said that Sibyl’s baby dying was God’s punishment of her sin. Aunt Lucy said if…

It’s the same nightmare that haunts me every day. I wrapped bed sheet around my fragile frame covering my body, which is drenched with cold drops of sweat. I crawled to the darkest corner in my bedroom trembling of fear as I sank in the darkness. The voices never leave my side; they echo in my head like a drum whether I am awake or asleep. The moon light was tickling my eyes. I felt like an empty shell as I sat there on the freezing-cold ground while my high body temperature was emerging with the coldness of the ground. I leaned my bare back against the cold wall. I closed my eyes, lifted my chin up, and covered my ears very tightly.…

Throughout her first two marriages, it seems Janie’s dreams are simply out of reach, but Joe’s death allows her a new sense of freedom and promise. For the first time, Janie feels her life has the possibility to become everything she desired since the first marriage. This is proven true when she meets Tea Cake, the epitome of everything she longed for in a lover; the true “flesh and blood figure of her dreams”. Though, even after Janie finds everything she is looking for, she is still tested by fate. During the chaos of the hurricane, Janie realizes she would rather die with Tea Cake than live without him. Her realization is ironic for the events to come when she has to make the tragic decision of killing his diseased mind before he kills her. The unfortunate climax as well as the trial to follow may make it seem Janie is a victim of fate. The shelf inside her must be empty since all her false hopes had fallen off. However, fate has a mysterious power over Janie that she does not understand until after she returns to Eatonville alone. It may seem Janie is a star-crossed figure of her dreams, but the end of the novel disproves this theory. Even through Janie had lost Tea Cake in the most tragic way, she did not lose the emotions she felt towards him or the beautiful memories he had given her. She is awakened to find that Tea Cake may have fallen off the shelf inside her as well, but his presence…

In the second article I chose to read, Hall and Fincham (2005) discuss the concept of self-forgiveness. Their analysis seeks to get to the heart of what it means and essentially what it takes to forgive oneself for wrongdoing and reckless abandon. Enright (1996) defines self-forgiveness as “a willingness to abandon self-resentment in the face of one’s own acknowledged objective wrong, while fostering compassion, generosity, and love toward oneself.” Hall and Fincham (2005) argue that self-forgiveness is an internal and volatile aberration that results in both a retaliatory and benevolent appeal on behalf of the offender. The reason for this is because the offender is in conflict with their ability to do wrong and then compensate with righteous action in rebuttal to their transgression. After the stage of victim identification and reconciliation, avoidance occurs which puts the offender and any sense or notion of wrongdoing they may have had, at peace with themselves (Hall & Fincham, 2005). Furthermore, Hall and Fincham (2005) deduce that self-forgiveness does not imply an exemption from heartache, frustration, or regret. The offender will not magically fail to remember or begin to root for such behavior that should lead to another bout with personal disdain and disappointment. In fact, the offender will undergo extensive self-analysis and even consider the implications of interpersonal forgiveness from oneself toward another had they committed a similar offense. Lastly, Hall and Fincham (2005) give attention to the moral aspects of the self-forgiveness concept. According to Horsbrugh (1974) interpersonal forgiveness is bound by biblical scripture which Jesus himself states that “When you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins”…

Only a humble human being can attain the quality to completely forgive. The person must go through trials and disturbance in their lives to know pain, endure suffering, know happiness and learn from life's mistakes. We can see clearly the ability to forgive in the Holy Bible by a man that went through hard times. Jesus Christ died for our sins. He could have damned every person from them on, but he chose to forgive for they and we do not know what we are doing. He possessed what so many of us take for granted nowadays: true forgiveness. Another case, in the church when Pope John Paul II asked “...forgiveness to all mankind for the mistakes made by the Catholic Church, for abuse committed by priests against children (sexual abuse).” Does asking for forgiveness on behalf of all the priests who were guilty of this crime somehow swipe their plates clean from such an unthinkable act? How far and to what extent are we, as humans, able to forgive one another? Have we truly changed from those people who crucified Jesus? In my short life, I have had many opportunities to understand the value of forgiveness. As far as time has allowed me to remember, I have always been taught to forgive, but never forget. When one of my friends decided to take my toy without permission I would forgive them, but I would…
