Seccombe (2006), in Families in Poverty, discusses six pathways through which poverty operates based upon a model developed by Brooks-Gunn and Duncan and the Children’s Defense Fund (p. 65). Although the pathway model is primarily focused on the potential effects of poverty on children, the model can also be applied to adults. Because of this, I found that the research presented by Seccombe on the pathways to poverty paralleled many of the experiences that Ehrenreich faced in her endeavor to make ends meet as a minimum-wage worker. Most of the connections I made between Seccombe’s research and Ehrenreich’s experiences fell under the pathway of “Housing Problems,” in which there were several similarities between the two.…
By practitioners using the EYFS framework and guidance from the EPPE project they are helping to develop children’s natural problem solving abilities through mathematics. The activities set by early year practitioners will be responsible for the wellbeing of children and should be designed to allow children to develop within their mathematical skills. This report aims to highlight a few of the many approaches and theories linked to mathematical development within an early years setting. Children need activities in both indoor and outdoor environments, they should be allowed to free flow between both settings and should be entitled to participate in a range of activities which should include the correct resources set up by the early year’s practitioner. Using Vygotsky’s scaffolding theory, early year practitioners should allow the child to explore using sustained shared thinking.…

I observed Mrs. Jessica Allred’s 2nd grade class at Paxson Elementary School. I observed the classroom from 9am to 12:15pm. The kids were in the classroom the entire time of this observation except for when they were released for recess at 10:45. The experience of seeing the morning routine of the students was very informative. The kids stayed in the same room for each subject. As a child, I would image what my life would be like when I became a teacher. In this paper I will explore different developmentally appropriate approaching philosophies, theories, and concepts when teaching math, reading, science and the fine arts to young children across a developmental curriculum. Having to gain knowledge from the early childhood text helped me to create what I consider to be the perfect classroom plan. Preschool education is very important because this is their first experience towards twelve years of grade school. The knowledge they gather will increase as they grow and development. Formerly, I didn’t allow the children to negotiate the language of mathematics as deeply as I do now. I didn’t allow children to explore as many vehicles of language as I do now. I didn’t understand how important it was to broaden my understanding of the word “text” and to use that knowledge to explicitly teach how to decipher graphs and charts and other math organizers the way I do now. I was pleasantly surprised to discover how much the students enjoyed and learned from working thoughtfully on paper, then sharing their ideas with their shoulder partners, the group, and with me.
